Exciting Start for Delhi Capitals Under New Leadership

Navi Mumbai: In her debut match as captain, Jemimah Rodrigues won the toss and chose to bowl first against the reigning champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) match held at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.

After successfully calling the toss, Jemimah, who is the youngest captain in WPL history, announced that Laura Wolvaardt, Chinelle Henry, Marizanne Kapp, and Lizelle Lee would be the four overseas players in the squad, while pacer Nandini Sharma was set to make her debut in the tournament.

Expressing her excitement, Jemimah stated, "DY Patil holds a special place in my heart. I made my Test debut here, celebrated my first World Cup victory, and now I’m leading Delhi for the first time on this ground – it’s truly significant for me. I enjoy the role of captaincy and have been leading my state team since I was 16, which has prepared me well for this moment."

She added, "Taking on this responsibility brings out the best in me, and my teammates have alleviated much of the pressure. I know they will support me, which makes the experience enjoyable. There’s a fresh energy in our group that I’m eager to see in action, as both our overseas and domestic players have put in considerable effort."

On the other hand, MI is looking to recover from a three-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their previous match. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur announced that left-arm spinner Triveni Vasistha would make her WPL debut, stepping in for Saika Ishaque.

Harmanpreet remarked, "Had we won the toss, we would have opted to chase. The quick turnaround between matches is challenging, but it’s crucial to learn from our last game and improve. We are professionals, and coming in fresh is vital. The pitch today appears different and looks favorable for batting."
