Jasprit Bumrah's Stellar Performance Leads India to T20 World Cup Final
Bumrah Shines in Semifinal Victory
Harry Brook, the captain of England, hailed Jasprit Bumrah as the greatest bowler of all time after the Indian pacer delivered a crucial 18th over that stifled England's chase, securing a seven-run victory for India in the T20 World Cup semifinal held at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on March 5. With this win, India advanced to the final, where they will face New Zealand on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The pitch provided good bounce, making it easier for batters to find their rhythm. However, Bumrah's exceptional performance set him apart, as he allowed only 33 runs in his four overs while claiming the wicket of Brook.
India set a formidable target of 254 runs for England, who started strong despite losing three wickets during the Powerplay. Jacob Bethell's impressive 105 runs off 48 balls kept England in contention. As England required 45 runs from the last three overs, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav turned to Bumrah for the critical 18th over. Bumrah's tight bowling left no room for England's batters to score, even making it difficult for a well-set Bethell to hit big shots. His precise yorkers restricted England to just six runs in that over, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
After Bumrah's over, England faced the daunting task of scoring 39 runs off the final 12 balls. Hardik Pandya followed with an economical over, conceding only nine runs. In the last over, England needed 30 runs but managed only 22, despite Jofra Archer hitting three sixes off Shivam Dube. Ultimately, India secured their place in the final for the second consecutive time.
Brook acknowledged Bumrah's skill, stating, "He's a very good bowler, arguably the best of all time at the minute. He's been a very good bowler for a long time. The Indians fielded extremely well, that catch (by Axar Patel) to dismiss me is arguably one of the best catches I've seen, so hats off to them."
Brook also commended India's batting lineup, recognizing the challenge of chasing down a target of 254 runs. India's opener Sanju Samson scored 89 runs off 42 balls, while Ishan Kishan contributed 39 runs off 18 balls. Shivam Dube added a quick 43 runs off 25 balls, with Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma chipping in with 27 and 21 runs, respectively.
Brook remarked, "They just have batsmen coming out of everywhere. They've got some extremely good players, they're clean ball-strikers. If you miss, you go for six or four. Unfortunately, we didn't execute as well as we could have, and that cost us, along with some dropped catches."
