Jasprit Bumrah's Future in Test Cricket Uncertain Amid Injury Concerns
Bumrah's Performance Under Scrutiny
On July 26, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif made a startling claim regarding Jasprit Bumrah, suggesting that the fast bowler may retire from Test cricket. This speculation arises after Bumrah's performance in the ongoing fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, where he has struggled to deliver his best.
In England's first innings, Bumrah bowled 28 overs, achieving figures of 1-95, with his sole wicket being Jamie Smith during the final session on Friday. Observers noted a significant decline in his bowling speed, with Bumrah operating mostly between 130-135 km/h, a stark contrast to the 140 km/h he consistently reached in earlier matches at Headingley and Lord’s.
"I believe Jasprit Bumrah may not participate in future Test matches and could even retire. He is facing physical challenges, and his pace has noticeably decreased in this match. Being an honest player, if he feels he cannot contribute fully, he might step back. It's not just about wickets; his speed has dropped to 125-130 km/h," Kaif stated in a video shared on X.
Concerns escalated when Bumrah was seen gripping his ankle during the second session, although he did return to bowl later. Commentators remarked that he seemed to be holding back, approaching his deliveries with caution.
With Bumrah already set to play only three of the five Tests due to workload management, Kaif indicated that fans might need to brace themselves for a future without him in the longest format of the game.
"His dedication is unquestionable, but his body is taking a toll. His performance in this Test suggests he may face difficulties in continuing to play Test matches. After key players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ashwin, Indian fans should prepare for the possibility of Bumrah's absence. I hope I'm wrong in my prediction, but what I observed leads me to this conclusion," the former batter concluded.
