James Dolan Clashes with City Officials Over Knicks Watch Party Cancellation

James Dolan, owner of the New York Knicks, is at odds with city officials over the cancellation of a watch party due to strict security measures. Following violent incidents at a previous event, Mayor Zohran Mamdani limited attendance to 1,000 fans, prompting Dolan's frustration. He criticized the decision, emphasizing the desire for a larger gathering. Mamdani defended the measures, prioritizing safety during this historic moment for the city. The Knicks recently lost to the Spurs in game three of the NBA Finals, leading the series 2-1.

Dolan's Frustration with Security Measures

James Dolan, the owner of the New York Knicks, expressed his anger towards city officials regarding the stringent security protocols surrounding Madison Square Garden for the NBA Finals matchup between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The heightened security measures, reminiscent of those during former President Donald Trump's attendance, led to the cancellation of the planned watch party at the arena. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch restricted the outdoor gathering to just 1,000 fans following violent incidents at a previous public viewing event in Bryant Park. Dolan did not hold back his frustration, labeling Mamdani and Tisch as 'party poopers' and announcing that there would be no screens set up outside for fans. He emphasized, "We're not about 999 people, we're about millions of people," during a sports radio interview, as reported by the BBC. Dolan had hoped for a reversal of the officials' decision, but that did not occur.

Mayor Mamdani's Response

Zohran Mamdani Defends Decision

In response to the backlash, Mayor Mamdani stood by the decision to limit attendance to 1,000 fans and confirmed the cancellation of the watch party. He stated, "Mr. Dolan has now decided to cancel the watch party. I know this is breaking hearts across our city." He emphasized the importance of safety, saying, "As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence."

MSG requested a permit for a watch party for 500-999 fans. We approved that permit for 999 fans. Mr. Dolan has now decided to cancel the watch party. I know this is breaking hearts across our city. But if there's one thing Knicks fans don't need permission for, it's showing up…

Commissioner Tisch also reiterated the necessity of the security measures, stating, "We now know that these restrictions were never about the President. It was just a convenient excuse to restrict how and when Knicks fans celebrate." In the meantime, the Knicks faced a defeat against the Spurs, losing 111-115 in game three of the NBA Finals, although they still lead the series 2-1.
