ISL Clubs Demand Clarity from AIFF Amid Financial Concerns
Joint Statement from ISL Clubs
Kerala Blasters FC, Chennaiyin FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Sporting Club Delhi, and Mumbai City FC have collectively expressed their concerns regarding the Indian Super League (ISL). In a recent social media announcement, they indicated that they might reconsider their involvement in the league unless the All India Football Federation (AIFF) provides clear guidance on the ongoing structural and financial uncertainties surrounding the ISL.
Concerns Over Future Participation
On Friday, these five clubs released a statement via Instagram, highlighting their potential withdrawal from the ISL if long-term clarity regarding the league's structure and commercial viability is not established. The statement conveyed their disappointment and concern, stating, "Due to the persistent uncertainty in professional football in India, we feel compelled to reassess our commitment to the league beyond this season."
Background of Uncertainty
Typically, the ISL runs from September to April, but this year it commenced on February 14 and concluded on May 21 due to difficulties in securing bidders. After prolonged uncertainty, the digital and television broadcasting rights were awarded to FanCode. The league faced delays stemming from disagreements between the AIFF and its partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), primarily due to unresolved contractual issues.
Financial Concerns Raised by Clubs
The clubs emphasized their ongoing investments in Indian football despite numerous challenges. However, they expressed that the persistent uncertainty regarding the league's structure and finances has made it increasingly challenging to maintain their commitments. They stated, "Our clubs have consistently invested in Indian football, even in tough circumstances, and remain dedicated to its future. Yet, the lack of structural certainty and commercial clarity has made it hard to justify the financial and operational commitments necessary for sustainable competition."
Call for a Sustainable Framework
The clubs urged the AIFF to consider their proposed model for a financially sustainable future for Indian football. They called for collaboration with all stakeholders to establish a stable and inclusive framework for the league. The statement concluded, "A financially sustainable league is essential for the future of Indian football. We propose an alternative model that we believe is credible and should be evaluated alongside other proposals by the AIFF. We urge the AIFF to recognize the realities faced by those funding and operating the league and to work together towards a sustainable and inclusive framework."
