Is Babar Azam Set to Reclaim Test Captaincy After Pakistan's Disappointing Start?
Babar Azam's Potential Return as Test Captain
Karachi: Following a disheartening 104-run loss in the first Test against Bangladesh, Pakistan is reportedly considering replacing Shan Masood with Babar Azam as the Test captain.
The team's performance has drawn significant criticism, particularly regarding Masood's leadership, as he struggled with the bat in both innings.
Sources indicate that there is a movement within the team to reinstate Babar as captain for the remaining matches of the World Test Championship, with seven Tests still on the schedule this year.
Since Masood took over as Test captain in December 2023, Pakistan has faced defeat in 11 out of 15 matches. Babar, who missed the initial Test due to a knee injury, is expected to return for the second match on May 18.
"Several key figures within the Pakistan Cricket Board are advocating for Babar's return to captaincy, believing this is an opportune moment for him to lead again," the source revealed.
Support for Babar's reinstatement is also evident among team members.
The current squad touring Bangladesh includes all three captains: ODI leader Shaheen Shah Afridi and T20I captain Salman Ali Agha.
"If Babar performs well in the second Test, he stands a strong chance of reclaiming the captaincy. Initial discussions with board officials suggest he is open to taking on the role again," the source added.
The plan is to reinstate Babar as Test captain and subsequently prepare him to assume the ODI captaincy ahead of next year's World Cup.
Babar led all formats from 2019 to 2023 before stepping down after the 2023 World Cup in India. He was reinstated as T20 captain for the 2024 World Cup but resigned again following a disappointing tournament.
The source also mentioned that Shan Masood is feeling the weight of the recent defeat and is contemplating a permanent position with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Last year, he was offered the role of Director of International Cricket and Player Affairs by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi but chose to complete the current World Test Championship cycle.
