Irfan Pathan Commends Anshul Kamboj's Performance in ODI Against New Zealand

Irfan Pathan has lauded Anshul Kamboj for his impressive bowling performance in the first ODI against New Zealand, suggesting that continued excellence could lead to selection for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. Kamboj's ability to adapt to challenging conditions and his versatility as a bowler have caught the attention of selectors. Despite earlier struggles in his career, his recent performance indicates a promising future. India's victory in this match was also marked by Virat Kohli's authoritative innings and strong bowling from the team, setting the stage for an exciting series ahead.

Irfan Pathan's Praise for Anshul Kamboj

Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, has expressed admiration for Anshul Kamboj's impressive bowling display against New Zealand in the first ODI. He suggested that if Kamboj continues to perform at this level, selectors might consider him for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup squad. In Auckland, Kamboj excelled in seaming conditions, achieving figures of 2 wickets for 22 runs in 10 overs, with 46 of his deliveries being dot balls. The Chennai Super Kings player managed to shake off the nerves associated with his international debut, showcasing a performance that could secure him a spot in the bowling lineup as the World Cup approaches, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Pathan's Assessment and Future Outlook

In a video shared by Cricinfo, Pathan noted that Anshul requires additional time to recover from extensive travel before stepping into Test cricket. Kamboj's Test debut last year was less than stellar, where he bowled 18 overs, conceding 89 runs at nearly five runs per over as an injury replacement. Pathan praised Kamboj's abilities with both the new and old ball, as well as his skills in death overs, indicating that he has the potential to advance in his career.

Understanding the Transition Challenges

"He will undoubtedly be one of the key bowlers. We must consider the circumstances of his Test match performance. Adjusting to the climate and recovering after travel is challenging for any bowler. Anshul needed more time to adapt to Test cricket during that period," Pathan explained.

Versatility in Bowling

"What stands out about him is his ability to bowl effectively with the new ball and his impressive death bowling skills, as demonstrated with CSK. He can bowl wide yorkers and has shown proficiency with the old ball in this match against New Zealand. He possesses a complete skill set, and if he continues on this trajectory, selectors will likely consider him for the World Cup squad. He is certainly a contender," Pathan concluded.

Overcoming Early Career Hurdles

Not long ago, Anshul faced significant challenges, particularly during an ODI against the West Indies, where he was hit hard by captain Shai Hope. In his debut ODI, he conceded 82 runs in nine overs, with Hope scoring 42 runs off just 31 balls, including six fours. Anshul's performances in both Test and ODI formats did not initially meet the expectations set by his IPL and domestic achievements.

India's Victory Against New Zealand

India secured a convincing victory against New Zealand in the rain-affected first ODI of the five-match series in Auckland, highlighted by Virat Kohli's commanding 74 runs and stellar bowling from Arshdeep Singh and Anshul Kamboj. Arshdeep led the bowling attack with four wickets, while Gurnoor Brar took three wickets, and Kamboj contributed with two, helping to restrict New Zealand to 185 runs. Kohli's innings of 74 off 51 balls, featuring 13 fours, guided India to chase down a revised target of 143 runs in 32 overs, despite rain interruptions.
