A Unique Talent in Cricket

In the realm of modern cricket, witnessing a bowler switch arms mid-over is quite uncommon. However, 24-year-old Vijay Yadav is changing that narrative in the UP T20 League.

With his exceptional ability to bowl with both arms, Yadav recently played a pivotal role in securing a victory for the Kashi Rudras against his previous team, the Gaur Gorakhpur Lions, by taking two key wickets.

From Local Talent to Rising Star

Yadav's journey in the UP T20 League commenced when he was identified as a promising local player ahead of the 2024 season. Initially, he represented the Gaur Gorakhpur Lions for two years before being acquired by the Kashi Rudras for ₹5.2 lakhs during the 2026 auction. For Yadav, this financial figure was merely a stepping stone in his cricketing career.

"I didn’t focus much on the auction price," Yadav reflects. "For me, it’s about the investment in cricket and the rewards that follow. Most of the money went towards my equipment."

Inspiration from Home and History

Originating from Gorakhpur, Yadav's passion for cricket was ignited by India's historic World Cup win in 2011. With his father serving as a Sub-Inspector and his mother a homemaker, pursuing a career in sports was not the obvious choice.

"I started playing cricket in 2012 after being inspired by India’s World Cup victory. It motivated me to contribute positively to my country," he shares.

Mastering the Art of Bowling

Yadav's dedication led him to represent the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) in both U-19 and U-23 tournaments, where his ambidextrous bowling caught the attention of scouts. His ability to bowl with both arms was developed out of necessity rather than a desire to stand out.

"Initially, my left hand was more effective," he explains. "Right-handed batsmen tend to attack right-handed bowlers, which posed challenges. So, I focused on my left arm and improved my control through practice."

The Challenges of Ambidextrous Bowling

Despite the seamless appearance on screen, Yadav acknowledges the physical demands of his unique skill. "Bowling with both hands is challenging. Many think it’s easy, but I dedicate time to practice with each hand," he admits.

His hard work has not gone unnoticed, as he received significant support from coaches during his development. "They encouraged me because of my progress, and I understand that to excel further, I must continue to work hard."

A Dual Role in the Game

While Yadav is gaining recognition as a mystery spinner, he also contributes as a lower-order batsman. Interestingly, he maintains a traditional batting stance.

"I bat right-handed and aim to hit sixes since I get limited opportunities to bat. I strive to make a significant impact when I do," he explains.

Inspired by a Cricketing Icon

In terms of his mindset and approach, Yadav looks up to Virat Kohli, a modern cricket icon known for his relentless work ethic. "Kohli is my idol. His passion for cricket is inspiring, and I admire his motivation, dedication, and aggression," he states.

A Bright Future Ahead

With his impressive performances in the UP T20 League, Yadav is on the verge of entering the Indian Premier League (IPL). The exposure from this state-level tournament has attracted the attention of major teams across the country.

"This platform is significant for me. I’ve had trials with MI (Mumbai Indians) and last year, SRH (Sunrisers Hyderabad) also invited me for trials," he shares.

As he continues to showcase his ambidextrous talent for the Kashi Rudras, Vijay Yadav is quickly becoming one of the standout stories of Season 4, a small-town player with a unique skill set, steadily making his way to the big leagues.
