Inauguration of Khel Mahakumbh 2026

On September 1, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the 'Khel Mahakumbh-Chief Minister's Championship Trophy 2026' at the Late Kailash Chandra Gahtori Sports Stadium in Tanakpur, Champawat district. The event commenced with CM Dhami passing the torch to celebrated athlete Gehna Mahar.

During the ceremony, athletes pledged to compete with integrity and sportsmanship. They also showcased yoga poses and participated in Uttarakhand's traditional sport, 'Murga Jhapta', as highlighted in a press release from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office.

A Platform for Emerging Athletes

CM Dhami emphasized that Khel Mahakumbh serves as a vital platform for showcasing the sporting talent from Uttarakhand's rural areas at state, national, and international levels. He assured that the government is dedicated to ensuring that no talented athlete is overlooked due to a lack of resources or opportunities.

He remarked that sports extend beyond merely winning medals; they instill discipline, confidence, and resilience in athletes, contributing to both personal growth and national strength.

Growth and Expansion of Khel Mahakumbh

Launched in 2017, Khel Mahakumbh has now reached its 10th edition. Last year, over 220,000 athletes participated, and CM Dhami expressed optimism for even greater participation this year.

This year's format has been expanded, with competitions starting at the Nyaya Panchayat level and advancing through assembly and parliamentary constituencies, culminating at the state level, thus providing multiple opportunities for athletes to display their skills.

Incentives and Support for Athletes

The government plans to award cash prizes to winners from the Nyaya Panchayat level up to the state level, with approximately ₹11 crore in prize money to be directly transferred to athletes' bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Additionally, athletes winning medals at the state level will now qualify for a 4% horizontal reservation in government jobs, recognizing their dedication and talent.

Uttarakhand's Sporting Achievements

CM Dhami praised Uttarakhand's athletes for their remarkable performance at the 38th National Games, which brought pride to the state. He is confident that the talent nurtured through Khel Mahakumbh will represent Uttarakhand and India with distinction in future competitions.

He noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, there has been a transformative shift in the country's approach to sports, with initiatives like 'Khelo India' and the 'Fit India Movement' encouraging talent from rural areas.

Investment in Sports Infrastructure

The Chief Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance sports infrastructure in Uttarakhand, including the recent foundation stone laying for the Uttarakhand State Sports University in Haldwani and plans for a modern stadium in Khatima.

He also mentioned the 'One District, One Sport' initiative aimed at promoting various sports disciplines and local athletes, fostering a unique sporting identity for each district.
