Mumbai Indians Set a Strong Total Against Gujarat Titans
In a thrilling encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 20, Tilak Varma's remarkable first IPL century propelled the Mumbai Indians (MI) to a formidable score of 199/5 against the Gujarat Titans.
After a challenging start due to Kagiso Rabada's fierce opening spell, Varma's unbeaten century ignited a late-game surge that turned the tide in favor of MI.
Gujarat opted to bowl first, and MI faced early difficulties. Their troubles began in the second over when opener Danish Malewar was dismissed LBW by Rabada for just two runs.
By the end of the third over, MI had managed only 21 runs, but Rabada struck again, sending Quinton de Kock back to the pavilion for 13 runs, leaving MI at a precarious 32/2 by the fifth over.
Rabada continued his impressive performance, claiming Suryakumar Yadav's wicket in the sixth over, leaving MI struggling at 46/3 at the end of the power play.
As the innings progressed, Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma worked to stabilize the score, reaching 75/3 by the 10th over. However, Prasidh Krishna ended their partnership in the 13th over by dismissing Dhir, who scored a quick 45 off 32 balls, featuring six fours and a six.
After 16 overs, MI stood at 126/4, with Varma and captain Hardik Pandya at the crease. The duo then accelerated the scoring, taking 15 runs off Rashid Khan in the 17th over and then hammering Ashok Sharma for 26 runs in the 18th over.
This explosive batting pushed MI to 167/4, with Varma reaching his half-century off just 33 balls. Mohammed Siraj eventually broke the dangerous 81-run partnership by dismissing Pandya for 15 runs in the 19th over, leaving MI at 177/5.
In a spectacular finish, Tilak Varma unleashed his full power in the final over, scoring 22 runs off Prasidh Krishna to complete his century in just 45 balls.
His outstanding innings of 101 runs, which included eight fours and seven sixes, was crucial in MI's recovery.
On the bowling side, Kagiso Rabada was the standout performer for Gujarat, finishing with impressive figures of 3/33. Mohammed Siraj maintained a tight line with 1/25, while Prasidh Krishna had a tough outing, ending with 1/54.
