Hubballi (Karnataka) [India], June 30: Smaran Ravichandran shared insights about his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), highlighting it as a significant learning opportunity that expanded his perspective on the sport and motivated him through the team's bold style of play.
Currently leading the Shivamogga Yodhas in the Maharaja Trophy 2026, Smaran participated in six matches for SRH in the 2026 IPL season. Despite a modest performance, accumulating only 19 runs in four innings, he emphasized the importance of being in the company of renowned players like Ishan Kishan, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Pat Cummins, which enriched his understanding of cricket.
In a conversation, Smaran remarked, “Observing their gameplay was enlightening. It broadened my view of cricket and showcased how they represented the game, especially in crucial moments. Their performance inspired us to emulate their style. It was a remarkable learning experience, especially since it was my debut IPL season.”
He acknowledged that his start in the IPL wasn't ideal but expressed optimism about improving his T20 skills for the future. “I didn’t begin my IPL journey on a high note, but I see it as an area for growth, and I aim to return stronger next season,” he stated.
Smaran had an impressive Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, emerging as the top run-scorer with 950 runs in 14 innings, averaging 86.36. He also had the opportunity to share the dressing room with KL Rahul, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, who played four matches for Karnataka.
He described the experience of being alongside KL Rahul as invaluable, noting Rahul's status as a respected senior player who consistently excels at the international level. Smaran mentioned that Rahul's participation in the Ranji Trophy significantly bolstered their batting lineup.
“Sharing the dressing room with him was fantastic. He is a role model for many in the country, having proven himself repeatedly at the highest level. His return to Karnataka for the Ranji Trophy was a major boost for our batting strength,” he explained.
Smaran highlighted that discussions with KL Rahul regarding batting strategies were instrumental in helping Karnataka reach the Ranji Trophy final. Their partnerships during matches enhanced his confidence and clarity in gameplay.
Although Karnataka reached the finals, they faced defeat against Jammu & Kashmir, who secured their first title. Smaran reflected, “Engaging in conversations with him about batting and other aspects was beneficial for our team’s journey to the finals. Our partnerships in the middle were crucial, and having him at the other end gave me the confidence to play more freely.”
He added that Rahul encouraged him to maintain a positive mindset, apply pressure on opponents, and seize opportunities from the start. “He always advised me to stay upbeat and challenge the opposition, which I implemented in those innings, and it proved effective,” Smaran noted.
Smaran revealed that Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan cricket legend, has been his idol since childhood. Although he didn't have the chance to meet or interact with him during his time at SRH, he continues to admire him greatly.
“Kumar Sangakkara has always been my cricketing idol. I didn’t get to meet him this year or during my time at SRH, but he remains someone I look up to, and I would love to converse with him,” he expressed.
Currently, the Smaran-led Shivamogga Yodhas are facing challenges in the tournament, positioned fifth in the standings with only two victories from six matches.
