Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan Set New T20 Partnership Record in IPL Playoffs
Historic Partnership in T20 Cricket
In Mullanpur, Punjab, the dynamic duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan has etched their names in T20 cricket history by surpassing the legendary pairing of Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli for the most century partnerships. During a thrilling chase of 215 runs, they amassed an impressive 167 runs in just 12.5 overs before Sudharsan was dismissed due to a hit-wicket incident.
This remarkable achievement marks their 11th century partnership in only 48 innings, eclipsing Gayle and Kohli's record of 10 centuries in 63 innings.
Furthermore, their 167-run partnership has set a new record for the highest stand in IPL playoffs for any wicket, breaking the previous record of 159 runs held by Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay during the 2011 final against RCB.
Gill's century also contributed to his impressive tally, making him the fourth player to achieve two seasons with over 700 runs in IPL history. In 15 innings, he has accumulated 722 runs at an average of 48.13 and a strike rate of 163.71, including one century and six fifties.
Previously, Gill had a standout season in 2023, scoring 890 runs. He joins the ranks of Virat Kohli, Sai Sudharsan, and Chris Gayle as one of the few players to have two IPL seasons with 700-plus runs.
This latest century marks Gill's fifth in IPL and his second as captain. He now holds the record for the fastest century by a GT player, surpassing his own 49-ball record from the 2023 Qualifier 2 against MI. Additionally, he is the first captain to score a century in IPL playoffs.
With this victory, the Gujarat Titans are set to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the title match at Ahmedabad on Sunday. After RR batted first, a stellar performance from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (96 runs off 47 balls) and a quick-fire 38* from Donovan Ferreira helped RR reach 214/6 in their 20 overs. In response, Gill's explosive 104 runs off 53 balls, alongside Sudharsan's 58 runs off 32 balls, paved the way for a thrilling three-wicket win.
This chase marks the highest target ever successfully chased in IPL playoffs, surpassing the previous record of 204 runs set by Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians in last year's Qualifier two. It also stands as GT's highest run chase in IPL history, exceeding their 204-run chase against Delhi Capitals in 2025.
