Williamson also commended Shashank Singh for his explosive performance, contributing significantly to the team's success. This article delves into Iyer's evolving game and the impact of his leadership on the field, making it a must-read for cricket enthusiasts.

Iyer's Evolution as a Player

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings and a key player in India's middle order, is impressively adapting his game, particularly in handling short balls, according to New Zealand cricket legend Kane Williamson.

Iyer kicked off his captaincy for PBKS with a remarkable innings of 97 not out, featuring nine sixes and five fours from just 42 deliveries, during their IPL match against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.

Williamson, who previously played for Gujarat Titans, commended Iyer for his remarkable adaptability.

He noted, 'What stands out about Shreyas is how he continues to evolve his game.'

'Teams had previously targeted him with short deliveries, but he is now adjusting exceptionally well—positioning himself deeper in the crease, lightening his front leg, and taking control of short-pitched balls.'

'His ability to shift his weight forward again is particularly impressive, complicating matters for bowlers who attempt the 'one-two' strategy of alternating between short and full deliveries. He can now access all areas of the field, making him a formidable batsman,' Williamson elaborated.

The New Zealand batting icon described Iyer's unbeaten 97 as 'of the highest standard.'

'From the very first ball, it was almost like a highlight reel—he played the ball exactly where it needed to be hit,' he remarked.

'He targeted anything outside off stump, accessing the offside, and even hit sixes over cover against some of the world's best seam bowlers. Taking on Rashid Khan is one of the toughest challenges in cricket.'

'As a leader, stepping in at No. 3, setting the tone, and confronting the opposition's top threats was remarkable. That innings was truly extraordinary,' Williamson added.

Williamson also praised Shashank Singh for his explosive 44 not out off just 16 balls, which helped PBKS set a total that was out of reach for the Titans.

'Shashank had an outstanding breakout season last year. He remains incredibly still at the crease, has beautiful hands, and doesn’t overexert himself, yet he has numerous scoring options,' he said.

'He can adjust to short-pitched deliveries—whether ramping it over the keeper or pulling off a length—but he can also maintain his position and execute powerful straight drives.'

'His ability to come in during the death overs, with little time to settle, and confidently take on bowlers is exceptional. For instance, when Rashid Khan slightly misses his length, Shashank can hit it back over square—that’s an incredibly challenging shot against someone of Rashid’s caliber. It highlights the quality of the player,' he concluded.
