Mumbai Indians Triumph Over Lucknow Super Giants

In a thrilling IPL 2026 encounter on Monday, the Mumbai Indians secured a six-wicket victory against the Lucknow Super Giants, successfully chasing a daunting target of 229 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Rohit Sharma, the former captain, made a spectacular return to the team, scoring 84 runs off just 44 balls, showcasing his prowess on home turf.

The 39-year-old opener had missed several matches due to injury but made a significant impact with his innings, which included six fours and seven sixes.

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary former Indian captain, praised Sharma's performance during the match on Star Sports' 'Amul Cricket Live'. He noted, “I've been observing Rohit closely over the past year. Since stepping down from captaincy in white-ball formats, he has concentrated more on his batting. His recent performances in the ODI series against Australia and the home series have been commendable, and now he’s continuing that trend in the IPL. Typically, he scores between 400 to 500 runs each season, and while he may not have many innings over 80, his contributions of 40 to 50 runs are crucial for setting the tone.”

Gavaskar further remarked on the evolution of Sharma's game, stating, “He aims to bat deeper and make a more significant impact. In this innings, we witnessed all the classic Rohit Sharma shots. His pull shots were impressive, and he effortlessly sent short balls into the stands. Full deliveries were driven elegantly through the covers, and he lofted the ball with ease. Against left-arm spinner M Siddharth, he played down the ground, hitting against the turn. A focused Rohit Sharma was evident against LSG, and if he maintains this form, the Mumbai Indians could jeopardize the playoff aspirations of several teams in the upcoming matches.”

In the match, MI chose to bowl first after winning the toss. LSG's innings featured notable contributions from Nicholas Pooran (63 runs off 21 balls, including four fours and eight sixes), Mitchell Marsh (44 runs off 25 balls with six fours and three sixes), and Himmat Singh (40 not out off 31 balls with two fours and two sixes), leading LSG to a total of 228/5.

However, the Mumbai Indians made quick work of the chase, thanks to a solid opening partnership of 143 runs between Ryan Rickelton (83 runs off 32 balls, with six fours and eight sixes) and Sharma, completing the chase in just 18.4 overs.

Currently, MI stands at ninth place with three wins and seven losses, while LSG finds itself at the bottom with two wins and seven losses.
