RCB Triumphs Over SRH in IPL 2026 Opener with Stellar Performances
RCB's Dominant Start to IPL 2026
Bengaluru (Karnataka) - In the opening match of the IPL 2026 season, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a convincing six-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
RCB successfully chased down a challenging target of 202 runs with 26 balls remaining, thanks to Virat Kohli's impressive 69 runs and a blistering 61 runs off just 26 balls from Devdutt Padikkal.
Following the match, RCB captain Rajat Patidar commended his team's collective effort, emphasizing the significant contributions from all players. He pointed out Jacob Duffy's pivotal role during the powerplay, which he believed was crucial to their success, alongside the solid foundation laid by Kohli and Padikkal.
Duffy's exceptional bowling saw him take three early wickets, leaving SRH struggling at 29/3 within just 4.3 overs.
"The boys played exceptionally well, especially for a season opener. Everyone contributed significantly. Duffy's performance in his debut match was a game-changer, and the way Kohli and Padikkal batted set the tone for our chase," Patidar remarked during the post-match presentation.
Patidar also praised Kohli as the team's standout batsman and highlighted Phil Salt's remarkable catch that dismissed the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen. He expressed his intent to make a swift and impactful contribution during the chase.
"Kohli is unparalleled. His ability to anchor the innings is vital for us. Salt's catch was phenomenal; I was taken aback by it. I aimed to make a significant impact and chase down the target quickly," Patidar added.
On the other hand, SRH captain Ishan Kishan acknowledged that early wickets hampered their momentum, stressing the importance of improved shot selection and execution. He recognized RCB's batting prowess, particularly Kohli's, and noted the need for SRH to learn from their mistakes while expressing his enjoyment of the captaincy role.
Kishan, who stepped in as captain for the absent Pat Cummins, stated, "The pitch played well after the initial overs. Losing early wickets was detrimental, and we need to be more strategic with our shot selection. Credit goes to the batters, especially Virat bhai. We must work harder; while mistakes are part of the first game, we need to be more cautious. I enjoyed the captaincy, but nerves can creep in during the IPL. We will improve as a team, and winning future games will be crucial," he said.
In the match, SRH managed to recover from a shaky start to post a competitive total of 201/9 against the defending champions.
After losing three quick wickets, Ishan Kishan's explosive 80 runs off 38 balls, along with vital contributions from the lower order, helped SRH surpass the 200-run mark.
For RCB, Jacob Duffy and Romario Shepherd each took three wickets, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Abhinandan Singh, and Suyash Sharma claimed one wicket each.
In response, Kohli's unbeaten 69 runs off 38 balls, complemented by Padikkal's explosive innings, propelled RCB to victory. Patidar also made a quickfire 31 runs off 12 balls, leading RCB to chase down the target in just 15.4 overs, marking the fastest 200-plus run chase in IPL history.
