RCB Faces Challenge as Hazlewood Misses IPL 2026 Opener

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru are gearing up for their IPL 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but they face a major hurdle with star bowler Josh Hazlewood sidelined due to injury. His absence could significantly impact RCB's bowling strength and overall performance as they aim to defend their title. Former player Krishnamachari Srikkanth has voiced concerns about the team's depth and energy levels without Hazlewood, who was instrumental in their championship run last season. As RCB prepares for the season, the early matches will be crucial in testing their resilience and squad capabilities.

RCB's IPL 2026 Journey Begins

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to kick off their IPL 2026 season on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. As the reigning champions, they carry the burden of high expectations. RCB clinched their inaugural IPL title in 2025. However, ahead of their first match, the team has suffered a significant setback with the news that star Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood will be unavailable for the initial games.

Hazlewood played a crucial role in RCB's championship run last season, taking 22 wickets in just 12 matches. His remarkable performances included a standout figure of 4 for 33 against the Rajasthan Royals, showcasing his knack for delivering in critical situations.

Former Indian opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth expressed concerns about the impact of Hazlewood's absence on RCB's bowling lineup. He noted that the team will not only miss an experienced player but may also see a decline in energy levels. 'Losing Josh Hazlewood is a significant setback. If he’s out for two weeks, they could miss three to four matches. His absence will weaken the entire bowling unit, and none of the replacements can match his caliber,' Srikkanth remarked in a video on his YouTube channel.

Hazlewood has been sidelined since he suffered a hamstring injury during the Sheffield Shield in mid-November last year. This injury has kept him out of the entire Australian summer and the T20 World Cup 2026, with additional Achilles issues complicating his recovery. He is currently under the care of Cricket Australia and will need their clearance before he can return to competitive play in the IPL.

Srikkanth further emphasized the tactical gap left by Hazlewood, highlighting the psychological advantage he provides to the bowling attack. 'Without Hazlewood, RCB loses 25 percent of its threat. He is not just a game-changer but a match-winner. The intimidation factor he brings is akin to that of Bumrah. Hazlewood bowls at a perfect Test match length, making it hard for batters to commit,' he added.

Last season, Hazlewood formed a strong partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, effectively leading RCB's pace attack. While Hazlewood secured 22 wickets, Bhuvneshwar contributed 17 wickets in 14 matches, with his best figures being 3 for 33.

Reflecting on their partnership, Srikkanth stressed the significance of bowling collaborations over individual performances. 'The duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood was exceptional last year. It's essential to focus on partnerships rather than just individual talent. If this combination is disrupted, RCB may face challenges,' he stated.

As RCB prepares to defend their title, the early matches will be crucial—not only for accumulating points but also for assessing the squad's depth and resilience in the absence of one of their key match-winners.
