Ravichandran Ashwin Commends Gujarat Titans' Tactical Mastery in IPL Victory
Ashwin Applauds Titans' Composure in IPL Clash
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 4: Renowned Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has lauded the Gujarat Titans (GT) for their strategic and calm demeanor during their four-wicket triumph over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in an IPL 2026 match held in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Ashwin emphasized the tactical acumen displayed by GT as they successfully chased down a target of 164 runs, clinching victory with just one ball to spare.
“The Gujarat Titans exhibited remarkable composure in their approach to the chase. Although their batting may not always appear explosive, it is methodical and tailored to the conditions. On pitches where scores of 160-170 are competitive, the focus should be on controlling the game and executing strategies rather than merely chasing high totals,” Ashwin remarked.
The former Indian player also acknowledged the franchise's consistent performance over the years, crediting their success to the commitment of both the players and management to their established processes.
“Their consistency over the years with this strategy is commendable, and the credit goes to the management and players for adhering to their process and performing under pressure,” Ashwin noted.
Ashwin highlighted Washington Sundar's significant contribution, which was crucial in leading GT to victory. Sundar's unbeaten score of 40 runs off 23 balls, featuring five fours and a six, was instrumental in securing the win in the 19.5th over.
“Washington Sundar’s innings was vital as it addressed a critical concern regarding the middle order of the Gujarat Titans. While the majority of their runs come from the top three, performances like this demonstrate their depth. Sundar has often been utilized flexibly, but he rose to the occasion, managed the pressure effectively, and ensured the chase was completed,” Ashwin elaborated.
He concluded by stating that although Sundar's performance wasn't flashy, it was a composed and clinical effort that helped GT clinch the win in a tense situation. “It may not have seemed flashy, but it was a very composed and clinical effort to secure the victory for the team,” Ashwin added.
In the match, GT triumphed over the table leaders PBKS by four wickets in a thrilling last-over finish at the Narendra Modi Stadium, bolstered by Jason Holder's impressive four-wicket haul and key contributions from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar.
PBKS managed to post a score of 163/9 after recovering from an early collapse, thanks to a 79-run partnership between Suryansh Shedge (57) and Marcus Stoinis (40), but Holder's figures of 4/24 kept them in check.
In response, GT successfully chased down the target in 19.5 overs despite losing early wickets, with Sudharsan anchoring the innings with 57 runs and Sundar finishing not out on 40, sealing the win with a six. This victory elevated GT to sixth place with 12 points, while PBKS remained at the top of the table with 13 points.
Holder was awarded the Player of the Match (POTM) for his outstanding bowling performance of 4/24 in 4 overs.
