Rajasthan Royals' Struggles in IPL 2026 Match

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], May 2: Following a seven-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2026 match, Rajasthan Royals' batting coach Vikram Rathour pointed to ineffective bowling, especially during the powerplay, as a significant factor in the defeat.

Rathour expressed confidence that a score of 226 runs should have been defendable on the pitch, but the team's failure to execute their bowling strategy ultimately led to their downfall.

“The bowling unit failed to implement their plans effectively. I believed that 226 runs was a sufficient total, and we should have been able to protect that. However, we allowed too many runs during the powerplay without taking any wickets. Our execution was lacking throughout the match,” Rathour stated in the post-match press briefing.

Despite the loss, Rathour found positives in the batting performance, particularly noting the middle-order's resilience after early wickets fell.

“We have been consistently getting good starts, and both openers have performed well in previous matches. This was the first instance where both were dismissed early. It was crucial for the team to respond effectively, and I was impressed with how Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel built their partnership, along with Donovan's finishing touch,” he remarked.

Rathour emphasized the team's depth, stating, “It instills confidence that we are not reliant on just one or two players. On any given day, whoever is in form can lead us to victory or set a solid score. This is a positive takeaway, but we need to focus on how to defend our totals better.”

Regarding skipper Parag's fitness, Rathour confirmed he was fine after experiencing cramps during the match.

“He’s perfectly okay. He had a minor cramp, but he’s good to go,” Rathour added.

On the topic of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's early dismissal, Rathour stated that it should not be viewed as a pivotal moment in the game.

“Not at all. We scored 226 runs, which I believe is adequate. Anyone can get out at any time, and we shouldn’t expect Vaibhav to score every time,” he explained.

Rathour further praised Sooryavanshi's performance, noting, “He has been playing well and converting his starts. He faced a good delivery early on, which led to his dismissal.”

Commenting on Kyle Jamieson's wicket of Sooryavanshi, Rathour regarded it as a testament to the young player's talent.

“It’s nothing negative. Jamieson was clearly excited, which is a compliment to Vaibhav, indicating that his wicket is valued,” he concluded.

A remarkable opening partnership of 110 runs between KL Rahul (75 off 40) and Pathum Nissanka (62 off 33) set the stage for DC's successful chase of 226 runs, which was completed by Tristan Stubbs (18*) and Ashutosh Sharma (25*) with five balls remaining.

Earlier, Riyan Parag showcased his skills with a stellar 90 off 50 balls, marking his first fifty-plus score of the season, while Donovan Ferreira contributed an explosive 47 off just 14 balls, helping RR reach 225/6 after choosing to bat first.

Parag anchored the innings alongside Dhruv Jurel (42) after early wickets fell, while Mitchell Starc (3/40) delivered crucial blows, including that of the RR captain.

This match represents DC's highest successful run chase in IPL history, concluding with five balls to spare.
