Punjab Kings Set to Welcome Young All-Rounder Cooper Connolly for IPL 2023
Punjab Kings Eyeing Cooper Connolly for IPL Season
Amidst the recent discussions surrounding the retention and release of Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, the Punjab Kings are keen on adding 22-year-old Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly to their roster. Connolly is eager to establish himself in the middle order for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Connolly, the Kings’ latest acquisition, is recognized for his dynamic batting style, excellent fielding skills, and effective left-arm spin. He secured a lucrative deal worth Rs 3 crore during the mini-auction. In a recent conversation, Connolly expressed his readiness to bat in any position but highlighted his preference for the middle order due to his power-hitting capabilities.
“I have batted at all positions, but the middle order would suit me best,” Connolly stated. He emphasized his adaptability, saying, “Whether it’s at three or in the middle, I’m ready to take on any role.” The upcoming IPL season marks Connolly’s debut in the tournament, and he could become a key player for the Kings, who had a strong performance last season. Playing for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, he will share the crease with notable players like Shreyas Iyer and Shashank Singh. “I’m still learning the number three role for the Perth Scorchers, which I enjoy. However, if my role in the IPL differs, I’m open to that as well, given the caliber of the team. Being in the middle order presents a great opportunity for me to focus and contribute,” he added.
Although Connolly has yet to meet with coach Ricky Ponting or captain Iyer, he is excited about the prospect of working with the Australian cricket legend. “I’ve heard great things about him, and I’m looking forward to refining my batting and gaining insights from him,” Connolly shared. With the tournament set to commence after the T20 World Cup, he is also preparing for the spin-friendly conditions in India. “Australian pitches are known for their pace and bounce. Playing against spin can be challenging for anyone, so it’s crucial to learn from experienced players and understand their strategies. Over the past three years since my debut for Australia, I’ve focused on adapting to international standards, adjusting to bowlers’ tactics, and countering them,” he concluded.
