Punjab Kings' Struggles Highlighted by Skipper Shreyas Iyer

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], May 12: After a narrow three-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2026 match, Punjab Kings' captain Shreyas Iyer pointed out deficiencies in fielding and bowling as significant factors for the defeat. He noted that the team failed to implement their strategies effectively on a challenging pitch.

This defeat marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Punjab franchise in the current IPL season.

During the post-match presentation, Iyer expressed that the Kings were approximately 30 runs short of a competitive total given the playing conditions.

“I won’t sugarcoat it; I’ll be straightforward—fielding and bowling were again the issues. I genuinely believe we were about 30 runs short on this wicket, considering the seam movement and inconsistent bounce,” he stated.

Reflecting on the bowling performance, Iyer acknowledged that while the pitch favored seamers, their execution was inconsistent.

“I had a strategy in mind, but given the seam movement and assistance for the bowlers, if we had been precise with our line and length, we could have taken wickets. Unfortunately, we fell short again,” he added.

The PBKS captain also stressed the necessity of disciplined bowling on such surfaces.

“Sticking to the surface is crucial. I always say that a hard length—just short of a hard length—is the ideal delivery, especially for new batsmen. It’s challenging to hit, and if you keep delivering those balls, there’s always a chance for a mis-hit, which could lead to a wicket. We’ve lacked in our planning,” Iyer concluded.

In a thrilling IPL 2026 match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, Delhi Capitals successfully chased down a daunting target of 211, winning by three wickets with an over to spare.

Punjab set a formidable score of 210/5, thanks to a blistering start from openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, who scored 22 runs off Mitchell Starc in the first over.

This explosive opening partnership set multiple records, including the highest first-over score in IPL history for PBKS. The momentum continued as Priyansh reached a rapid half-century in just 24 balls, helping Punjab to 72/0 at the end of the powerplay and 107/2 at the halfway mark, despite a brief middle-order collapse.

Captain Shreyas Iyer played a pivotal role, scoring an unbeaten 59 off 36 balls, while Suryansh Shedge contributed a late 21*, ensuring Punjab crossed the 200-run threshold and finished at 210/5. For Delhi, Madhav Tiwari and Starc each took two wickets.

In response, Delhi had a rocky start, losing crucial wickets early as Arshdeep Singh and Yash Thakur reduced them to 47/3 during the powerplay. However, captain Axar Patel steadied the ship with a composed yet aggressive 56 off 33 balls, while David Miller added firepower with a quick 51 off 28 balls. Their partnership of 64 runs brought DC back into contention.

Despite PBKS tightening the match by reducing DC to 175/6, the lower order turned the tide again. Ashutosh Sharma’s rapid 24 off 10 balls and vital contributions from Madhav Tiwari kept the chase alive, culminating in a dramatic penultimate over filled with a no-ball and several boundaries that sealed the victory. Delhi ultimately finished at 216/7 in 19 overs, completing a remarkable chase.

This victory propelled Delhi Capitals to seventh place in the points table with five wins from 12 matches, while Punjab Kings faced their fourth consecutive defeat but remained in fourth position.
