Punjab Kings Faces Coaching Changes After IPL 2026 Disappointment
Coaching Departures at Punjab Kings
Chandigarh, October 8 – In a significant shift for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), both James Hopes and Brad Haddin have resigned from their positions as fast-bowling and fielding coaches, respectively, as reported by a sports news outlet.
These changes were anticipated, especially with Hopes recently taking on the role of head coach for Queensland and the Brisbane Heat, while Haddin has accepted the head coach position for New South Wales.
The exits of Hopes and Haddin create crucial openings for PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting, who now needs to find replacements for his coaching staff. Additionally, Sairaj Bahutule, who was the spin-bowling coach during IPL 2026, has also departed to join the Indian men's cricket team in the same capacity.
The Punjab Kings had a disappointing conclusion to their IPL 2026 season. Under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, the team initially excelled, winning their first six matches and holding the top position in the points table for nearly a month. However, their performance declined in the latter half of the season, leading to their elimination from playoff contention.
After finishing as runners-up in 2025, PBKS started strong in 2026, achieving six victories, one no-result, and an impressive unbeaten streak of seven matches, accumulating 13 points.
Unfortunately, poor tactical decisions and dropped catches contributed to a series of six consecutive losses, with their only win in the second half coming against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Ultimately, the 15 points they secured were insufficient, as the Rajasthan Royals (RR) clinched the final playoff spot with 16 points after defeating the Mumbai Indians (MI), leaving PBKS just one point shy of qualification in fifth place.
