Punjab Kings Aim for Playoffs Despite Setback Against Delhi Capitals
Punjab Kings Fall Short in High-Scoring Encounter
Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh) [India] - On May 12, Punjab Kings (PBKS) encountered a challenging match at home, narrowly losing to Delhi Capitals in a thrilling contest at the HPCA Cricket Stadium.
Even with this loss, the Kings hold the 4th position in the IPL 2026 standings, maintaining a solid chance of advancing to the playoffs. With 13 points and three matches remaining, the team is determined to rectify their mistakes and regain their winning form, as stated in a recent announcement.
The match kicked off with an impressive display from the opening batsmen, Priyansh Arya (56) and Prabhsimran Singh, who quickly amassed 51 runs within the first three overs. Captain Shreyas Iyer played a pivotal role, scoring an unbeaten 59 and helping the Kings reach a formidable total of 210/5. However, a late surge from Delhi enabled them to chase down the target with six balls remaining.
In light of the outcome, spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule expressed his disappointment but reiterated the team's unwavering objective.
“We had a strong start, and while we’ve lost our last four matches, we are still in contention for qualification. We need to put this behind us and focus on performing our best in the next three games. This tournament has its ups and downs, and we must remain focused on what lies ahead,” he remarked.
Bahutule also pointed out the positives from the batting lineup, which has consistently surpassed the 200-run mark, indicating the team's inherent strength.
“Everyone is feeling the disappointment, but it’s crucial not to overthink or analyze too much. We must learn from this match and focus on the positives—we’ve scored over 200 runs again. We’ll build on those strengths as we prepare for the next challenge in a couple of days,” he added.
With an important match against the Mumbai Indians scheduled for May 14, Bahutule is confident that the team will address their recent fielding and bowling issues to secure a playoff position.
“We’ve been dropping catches at critical moments. We will certainly examine those areas and find ways to improve. Major changes aren’t necessary since everyone has been performing well. We will continue to enhance our game as the tournament progresses,” he concluded.
Punjab Kings will remain in Dharamsala to take on the Mumbai Indians this Thursday, May 14, as they aim to bounce back in front of their home crowd.
