Nicholas Pooran Shines with Record-Breaking Performance for Lucknow Super Giants
Pooran's Explosive Innings
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 4: Nicholas Pooran, the former West Indies middle-order batsman, delivered an outstanding performance for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), achieving the second-fastest score in the franchise's history. He narrowly missed breaking his own record by just two balls during the match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Pooran's remarkable innings included a blistering 63 runs off just 21 balls, featuring one four and eight sixes, with three of those sixes coming off the bowling of all-rounder Will Jacks. His half-century was reached in a mere 16 balls, although he holds the record for the fastest fifty for LSG, which he scored in just 15 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) earlier in the 2023 season.
With eight sixes, Pooran matched the second-highest total for an LSG player in a single innings, trailing only Quinton de Kock's ten sixes against KKR in 2022. This marked the fifth occasion in IPL history where Pooran reached his half-century in under 20 balls, with Abhishek Sharma holding the record for the most such instances for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at six.
After struggling with just 82 runs in his previous eight innings, Pooran has now accumulated 145 runs in nine innings, averaging 16.11 with a strike rate of 118.85. This was his first T20 half-century since 2026, where he has scored 257 runs in 16 innings at an average of 16.06 and a strike rate of 120.65.
In the match, MI won the toss and chose to bowl first. Following a quick dismissal of Josh Inglis (13), contributions from Mitchell Marsh (44 runs off 25 balls, including six fours and three sixes) and Pooran (63 runs off 21 balls) helped LSG stay competitive with a rapid partnership of 94 runs. However, Corbin Bosh's impressive bowling (2/20) limited LSG to a total of 160/5. Aiden Markram (31* off 25 balls) and Himmat Singh (40* off 21 balls) then formed a powerful 68-run partnership, propelling MI to a final score of 228/5 in their 20 overs.
This score ranks as LSG's fourth-highest in IPL history, with their top score being 257/5 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2023. The team hit 16 sixes during this match, marking the joint second-highest total for them in a single innings.
Notably, LSG reached the 100-run milestone in just 6.5 overs, setting a new record for the fastest team 100, surpassing their previous record of 7.3 overs against SRH in Hyderabad in 2025.
Additionally, LSG's score of 141/3 after the first 10 overs is their highest at that stage, eclipsing the previous best of 129/2 against SRH in 2025.
