In New Chandigarh, Punjab, Nehal Wadhera, a batter for Punjab Kings (PBKS), has characterized his disappointing IPL 2026 season as a significant learning opportunity. He emphasized that every cricketer faces tough times and is committed to emerging stronger from this setback.
The left-handed batsman, who had a stellar IPL 2025 with 369 runs, found it challenging to maintain that form in 2026, managing only 65 runs.
In a conversation, the 25-year-old expressed that he did not attribute his struggles to inadequate preparation.
Wadhera stated, "Every player experiences difficult phases, and this season was mine. I performed well in the previous three seasons, so I view this as a learning tournament."
He assured that he had thoroughly prepared for the season and was aware of the potential challenges. However, he recognized that even with the best preparation, outcomes can be unpredictable.
He remarked, "I won’t blame my preparation; I trained even harder this year. I anticipated the challenges, but sometimes things just don’t go as planned. This was one of those years."
Despite the challenges, Wadhera remains optimistic about his ability to recover and seize future opportunities.
He added, "I’m confident in my ability to bounce back, learn from my mistakes, and make the most of my next chance. I’m ready for that."
While he felt disappointed with his performance, he believes that setbacks can serve as valuable lessons if players are willing to learn and improve.
He noted, "It’s a learning curve. Yes, I was disappointed, but if you don’t learn from your failures, what’s the point?"
Wadhera also mentioned that he sought guidance from PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer towards the end of the season, finding the conversation motivating.
He said, "I’m open to learning and discussing with seniors. I spoke with Shreyas Iyer on our last day, and he provided great insights. He reminded me that every player experiences ups and downs, but it’s about how you recover from them."
He admires Iyer’s consistent performance in the IPL and his leadership role in the Indian team, viewing him as a role model.
Wadhera expressed his ambition to represent the senior Indian team, having previously played for India at the Under-19 level. He is focused on continuous improvement both on and off the field.
He stated, "I’m working on becoming a better version of myself, both on and off the field. I’m utilizing my time effectively, whether on the field or elsewhere."
He concluded, "If I keep this up, the day I represent my country won’t be far off."
Wadhera made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2023, where he had a promising start with two half-centuries. However, his opportunities dwindled in the following season, leading to limited appearances in IPL 2024.
After being released by Mumbai ahead of the 2025 mega auction, he entered the bidding with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, attracting interest from franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals. Ultimately, PBKS secured him for Rs 4.20 crore.
This move proved advantageous for both Wadhera and the franchise, as he had his best IPL season in 2025, scoring 369 runs in 16 matches with an average of 30.75 and a strike rate exceeding 145, contributing significantly to PBKS's journey to the finals.
Currently, PBKS has initiated a five-day off-season training camp in New Chandigarh, starting from August 11 and concluding on August 15. The camp includes six players: Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, Harpreet Brar, Pyla Avinash, Praveen Dubey, and Nehal.
The pre-season training is being conducted under the guidance of the franchise's coaching staff, led by Trevor Gonsalves.
