Mumbai Indians Fall Short in IPL Match

New Delhi, April 4: The Mumbai Indians experienced their initial loss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, unable to defend a total of 162 runs against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday. Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed that the team fell short by approximately 15-20 runs.

During the post-match interview, Suryakumar remarked, “When batting first, it’s crucial to focus on the game rather than the score. We aimed for a target of 180-185, but ultimately, we were 15-20 runs short. The pitch was decent, and while we anticipated it to be slower, we still didn’t reach the expected score. However, I must commend the bowlers and acknowledge the excellent batting from their side in the second innings.”

With regular captain Hardik Pandya sidelined due to illness, Suryakumar took charge of the MI team.

MI batted first but could only manage 162/6, despite Suryakumar's contribution of 51 runs. Naman Dhir added a quick 28 runs off 21 balls before being dismissed by T Natarajan.

Reflecting on MI's batting performance, Suryakumar stated, “Naman and I got out at critical moments; otherwise, we could have posted a competitive score. There will be days like this when things don’t go as planned, but we will regroup, work hard, and return stronger in the upcoming matches.”

Mukesh Kumar claimed two wickets, while Patel, Natarajan, Ngidi, and Nigam each took one wicket.

In pursuit of 163 runs, Sameer Rizvi played a stellar innings, scoring 90 runs off 51 balls, leading his team to victory with ease.

Rizvi's score is the second-highest by an impact player in IPL history, following Jos Buttler's 107* against KKR in 2024.

Additionally, Rizvi's 90 runs mark the third-highest score by a DC player against MI, trailing only Virender Sehwag's 95 not out in 2013 and Jason Roy's 91 not out in 2018. His seven sixes tie him for the most by a DC player against MI, alongside Rishabh Pant in 2019 and Tristan Stubbs in 2024.

Suryakumar praised Rizvi's performance, stating, “Coming in at 7 for 2 and batting the way he did deserves a lot of credit. He kept us from getting back into the game despite our best efforts in the bowling department.”
