Chennai Super Kings Coach Discusses MS Dhoni's Injury

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On April 26, the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Stephen Fleming, shared that MS Dhoni is currently managing a persistent calf injury.

Fleming emphasized the fragility of the injury, noting that any further strain could potentially sideline Dhoni for the remainder of the season. He mentioned that the seasoned player is concentrating on his recovery and regaining mobility.

Although Dhoni has been part of CSK since March and has participated in practice matches and net sessions, which have been widely circulated on social media, he has not yet played in any of the team's eight matches this season.

“The calf injury is quite serious. If he (MS Dhoni) aggravates it, he could be out for the entire season. We took precautions early on. He tweaked it again during a warm-up game, as I understand it. Since then, he has been diligently working on his movement. However, there has been a setback,” Fleming stated after CSK's defeat to the Gujarat Titans by eight wickets on Sunday.

Fleming reassured fans that Dhoni is making steady progress in his recovery, collaborating closely with the physiotherapist, although the team is still waiting for full clearance regarding his return.

He added that Dhoni has been actively observing younger players during practice and match simulations, evaluating their readiness for the IPL while continuing to focus on his rehabilitation. Fleming mentioned that while there is no specific timeline for Dhoni's return, he is improving and could be back soon once fully fit.

“Ultimately, he is the best judge of his condition. He is putting in the effort with the physio and following his rehabilitation plan. We are just waiting for the go-ahead. I want to stress that he is making progress and doing everything he can,” Fleming remarked.

“He has been watching some of the younger players during practice games and match simulations, feeling confident in their abilities to compete in the IPL. Now, it’s just about allowing time for his recovery. He is gradually getting there. You never know; it could be the next game or the one after that, but he will definitely return one day,” he concluded.

Currently, CSK sits sixth on the points table after eight matches, with three victories and five losses. They have six games remaining in IPL 2026, with their next match at home against the Mumbai Indians on May 2.
