Dhoni Discusses RCB's Rise and CSK's Struggles

In Bengaluru, Indian cricket icon MS Dhoni shared insights on the impressive performance of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), highlighting their consecutive victories over the last two years. He acknowledged that RCB has outperformed his own team, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and expressed optimism for a stronger season ahead for CSK.

Dhoni, who missed the IPL 2026 season due to fitness concerns, made these comments during a healthcare event in Bengaluru.

CSK, known for their five championship titles, has faced a challenging period recently. Although they secured IPL victories in 2021 and 2023, they have also experienced disappointing finishes, including last place in 2025. Conversely, RCB has shown remarkable improvement, consistently reaching the playoffs except for the 2023 season and clinching back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026 under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. This year, CSK ended the season in eighth place, showing flashes of potential.

In their recent encounters, RCB has dominated CSK, winning four out of the last five matches.

When discussing the contrasting performances of the two teams, Dhoni remarked, “The quality on paper doesn’t always translate to success on the field. What matters is how you perform on the day. In shorter formats, the margins between teams are razor-thin. We have struggled in the last two years, and it’s important to acknowledge that RCB has excelled.”

He added, “Life has its ups and downs. It’s crucial to identify areas for improvement as a team. We knew that winning wouldn’t last forever, and the true test of character comes during tough times. RCB has shown consistent performance, while we have not.”

Dhoni expressed hope that the team can avoid injuries next season, allowing key players to remain fit throughout.

“Understanding roles and responsibilities makes things easier. We look forward to another exciting match in Bengaluru, hoping for a thrilling encounter in 2027 that fans will enjoy,” he stated.

He also noted the unique appeal of playing in Bengaluru, saying, “As entertainers, we aim to provide excitement. Batsmen enjoy this venue because the ball travels well, often resulting in sixes, even on mistimed hits. Bowlers feel the pressure but also recognize that performing well here earns them respect. Overall, it’s a high-scoring venue that offers a lot of fun.”
