Mohun Bagan Super Giant Triumphs Over NorthEast United FC in Rain-Soaked Clash
Mohun Bagan Secures Narrow Win in Challenging Conditions
Guwahati (Assam) [India], April 19: In a tightly contested match affected by heavy rain, Mohun Bagan Super Giant emerged victorious against NorthEast United FC with a score of 1-0 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Sunday during the ongoing Indian Super League 2025-26.
The reigning champions took an early lead just five minutes into the match, thanks to Robson, who capitalized on a well-executed team play to finish with precision. The team then focused on a solid defensive strategy, spearheaded by Vishal Kaith, to maintain their advantage despite the challenging weather.
This win propels Mohun Bagan SG to the top of the league standings, accumulating 20 points from nine matches, and establishing a two-point lead over Mumbai City FC. In contrast, NorthEast United FC remains at the bottom of the table with only seven points from the same number of games.
The Mariners started the match with high energy, showcasing their intent early on. Jamie Maclaren made a notable run down the right flank in the third minute, but was thwarted by a timely interception from Highlanders' defender Robin Yadav.
The breakthrough came in the fifth minute through a seamless attacking sequence. Liston Colaco initiated the play from the right side, passing to Sahal Abdul Samad, who made a penetrating run into the box before delivering a cutback. Robson, perfectly timing his entry, finished with a composed right-footed shot into the top corner, giving Mohun Bagan an early lead.
Throughout the first half, Mohun Bagan maintained control of the ball, with Jason Cummings, Sahal, and Robinho all testing the NorthEast defense. However, goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh stood firm, preventing any further goals. The heavy rain complicated matters, causing the ball to skid unpredictably and making it difficult for both teams to maintain possession in the attacking third.
NorthEast United began to find their rhythm and had their first significant chance in the 36th minute when Parthib Gogoi was set up for a shot. Vishal Kaith, however, was quick off his line to close the angle and force the shot wide.
Despite NorthEast enjoying more possession towards the end of the first half, Mohun Bagan's defense remained resolute, ensuring they went into halftime with their narrow lead intact amidst the stormy conditions.
The second half resumed after a prolonged delay due to the rain, and the weather continued to impact the game's pace. Both teams struggled to create sustained offensive plays, although NorthEast displayed increased urgency in their quest for an equalizer.
Macarton Nickson and Thoi Singh attempted shots from distance, but Vishal Kaith was alert, denying their efforts. As the match progressed, the Highlanders pushed more players forward, sensing a chance to equalize.
Their best opportunity came during stoppage time when substitute Ankith Padmanabhan found space in the box, but Kaith made a crucial save. The rebound fell to Jairo Samperio, whose shot was dramatically blocked by center back Mehtab Singh, preserving Mohun Bagan's lead. Moments later, Mehtab was again pivotal, making another vital clearance to thwart Andy Rodriguez.
Ultimately, Robson's early goal was sufficient for Mohun Bagan Super Giant to claim all three points in these challenging conditions.
