Lungi Ngidi of Delhi Capitals in Stable Condition After Hospitalization
Lungi Ngidi's Condition After Injury
Delhi Capitals' fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is reported to be in a "stable" condition and is expected to be "discharged shortly" from a local hospital. This follows an injury he sustained during an IPL match against Punjab Kings on Saturday.
The South African cricketer was transported off the field in an ambulance after suffering a significant head injury while attempting to catch a ball. He was taken to BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital for a thorough medical evaluation.
According to IPL officials, the 30-year-old pacer experienced headaches and neck pain but is currently stable. The league confirmed on social media, "Lungi Ngidi of Delhi Capitals hit his head on the ground while attempting to take a catch during his team’s match against Punjab Kings. He was shifted to the hospital in an ambulance as he complained of a headache and neck pain."
The IPL further stated, "Ngidi is stable and is due to be discharged shortly from the hospital. Vipraj Nigam is on the field as a concussion substitute."
A CT scan conducted on Ngidi returned normal results, and he is presently under the care of a neurosurgeon, as per a source. The source added, "If all parameters remain normal, he is likely to be discharged soon."
Ngidi was attempting to catch a mishit from Punjab opener Priyansh Arya off Axar Patel when he misjudged the ball's trajectory. As a result, he fell backward, and the back of his head struck the ground, causing him significant pain.
Immediately after the fall, he covered his head while on the ground, and medical staff rushed to assist him with a stretcher. Ngidi was seen responding to the support staff as fellow South African players Tristan Stubbs and David Miller, along with Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting and Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani, came to check on him.
He was ultimately taken away in an ambulance, which was facilitated by the Delhi Traffic Police, who created a green corridor to ensure a swift transfer to the hospital despite heavy traffic.
Delhi Traffic Police reported that they received information about the medical emergency during the match, prompting quick coordination efforts. ACP Traffic (Central District) Sanjay Singh worked with the Police Control Room to establish the green corridor for the ambulance, which reached the hospital in just 11 minutes, navigating through peak-hour congestion.
