Ngidi's Injury Update

Lungi Ngidi, the fast bowler for Delhi Capitals (DC), has been released from a hospital in Delhi following an injury sustained during the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The South African pacer suffered a significant fall, landing on the back of his head and neck.

Ngidi was treated at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital after the incident during the IPL match. Kiran Kumar Grandhi, the Chairman and co-owner of Delhi Capitals, visited him at the hospital.

Match Highlights

Despite KL Rahul's impressive 152*, along with a remarkable 126-run partnership between openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, and a powerful 71* from captain Shreyas Iyer, PBKS achieved a record chase of 265 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium. DC struggled without Ngidi, who had to be carried off the field after his fall while attempting a catch.

In the third over of PBKS's innings, Ngidi attempted to catch a lofted shot from Priyansh Arya but lost control and fell heavily, leading to a lengthy stoppage of over 10 minutes as Vipraj Nigam was brought in as a concussion substitute.

Injury Assessment

Following the incident, the IPL provided an update confirming that Ngidi was 'stable and set to be discharged today,' which indeed occurred shortly after his injury.

Venugopal, during the post-match press conference, commented on Ngidi's condition, stating, 'I believe it’s not serious. We will provide updates, but it doesn’t seem critical.'

Performance Insights

Ngidi has been a vital player for DC this season, claiming seven wickets in seven matches with an average of 29.42 and an economy rate of 8.70, boasting best figures of 3/27.

Venugopal also highlighted the team's catching issues, noting that they dropped 'almost six catches,' including two from skipper Shreyas Iyer by Karun Nair. He emphasized the importance of capitalizing on such opportunities to defend totals effectively.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on the loss, Venugopal mentioned, 'We will see how we respond in the next game. There are positives, but we need to improve our powerplay bowling and catching.'

Regarding KL Rahul's record-setting 152*, which made him the third overall and first Indian to join the IPL's 150-run club, Venugopal praised his leadership, saying, 'KL took responsibility as a senior player, and his performance was commendable. We may not have won, but we will return stronger in the next match.'

Current Standings

With this victory, PBKS remains unbeaten with six wins and one no-result, accumulating 13 points. Meanwhile, DC sits in sixth place with three wins and four losses, totaling six points. PBKS also set a new record for chasing down 262 runs, previously held against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 season.
