Kolkata Knight Riders Gear Up for IPL 2026 Amid Injury Concerns
Kolkata Knight Riders' Season Outlook
The Kolkata Knight Riders are set to be a focal point as the IPL 2026 season commences on March 28 (Saturday). After a disappointing 8th place finish last season, the franchise has undertaken a significant overhaul of its roster. However, there are concerns regarding the participation of Harshit Rana, who has been sidelined from the T20 World Cup 2026 due to an injury. Unfortunately, KKR's head coach Abhishek Nayar has confirmed that Rana will miss the entire IPL season due to this injury.
In response to a question from Sports Now, Nayar stated, "Losing Harshit is a major setback as he has been a crucial player for us over the past few seasons, including our championship run. His development as a cricketer has been impressive, and his absence will be felt greatly." He further mentioned that the team is currently evaluating several bowlers who have participated in practice sessions to find a suitable replacement for Rana.
"We are in the process of assessing who might fit into his role and contribute effectively to the team's progress. We hope to identify a good replacement soon," Nayar added during a media interaction organized by JioStar.
Matheesha Pathirana's Return
Matheesha Pathirana Fit To Play
As reported by RevSportz, Matheesha Pathirana is expected to make his return from injury and participate in KKR's second match of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 2 (Thursday). This match will mark KKR's first home game of the season at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Consequently, the Sri Lankan pacer will miss the opening match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on March 29 (Sunday).
In a statement to PTI, Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Bandula Dissanayake confirmed that the board has issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for Pathirana. He noted that Pathirana has completed his rehabilitation and is fit to play, but his participation in the IPL will ultimately depend on KKR's assessment of his readiness. "As far as I know, he is fit and we have given him NOC to participate in the IPL. The franchise will need to evaluate his condition before making a decision," Dissanayake stated.
