KKR's Anticipation for Pathirana's Comeback

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - March 28: Shane Watson, the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has indicated that the team is currently in a holding pattern regarding the availability of Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana for the upcoming IPL 2026 season.

Earlier, KKR's head coach Abhishek Nayar confirmed that Pathirana would miss the initial matches of the IPL due to a calf strain, which requires him to undergo rehabilitation with Sri Lanka Cricket. The pacer was acquired by KKR for a substantial Rs 18 crore during the IPL 2026 auction.

During a pre-match press conference ahead of their IPL 2026 opener against the Mumbai Indians on March 29, Watson stated that the team is closely monitoring Pathirana's situation, highlighting their collaboration with Sri Lanka Cricket to ensure he returns in optimal condition without being rushed back.

Watson remarked, “With Pathirana, it’s clearly a waiting game right now. We are being guided by Sri Lanka Cricket and are doing everything possible to have him here as soon as we can. Given the quality of our support and medical staff at KKR, we share the same goal as Sri Lanka Cricket. We want Pathirana to be fit and ready, and we would never push him to return prematurely.”

He further emphasized that KKR is cautious about not hurrying Pathirana's return to avoid aggravating his injury. The team is eager for him to join and start the integration process, especially since he was a key target during the auction.

“The last thing we want is for him to play in the first game and risk further injury by coming back too soon. We hope he can arrive here sooner rather than later so we can begin the integration process. He was one of our top priorities in the auction,” Watson added.
