Insights into KL Rahul's Leadership Struggles

In a recent discussion, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer shed light on KL Rahul's frustrations during his tenure with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jaffer noted that the team's tendency to lose matches from winning positions left Rahul feeling "deeply frustrated."

Rahul played for PBKS from 2018 to 2021, captaining the side during this period. Jaffer, who was the head coach of PBKS from 2019 to 2021, highlighted that while Rahul had impressive individual performances, including winning the Orange Cap in 2020 with 670 runs, the team consistently finished in sixth place out of eight teams.

On The Great Indian Cricket Show aired on Doordarshan, Jaffer shared anecdotes from his coaching experience, emphasizing Rahul's typically calm demeanor. However, he recalled moments when the batter's frustration became evident, particularly during tight finishes.

Jaffer described Rahul as a reserved individual who rarely shows anger. Yet, he recounted a specific instance where Rahul's composure slipped after a heartbreaking loss, revealing his disappointment without crossing any lines.

In the 2020 season, PBKS faced tough defeats, including a Super Over loss to Delhi Capitals and a narrow two-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders. These losses were pivotal, as they ultimately affected PBKS's chances of making the playoffs.

The following season saw similar heartbreaks, with close losses to Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, again leaving PBKS short of playoff qualification. Despite Rahul's impressive run tally of 626 runs in that season, the team finished with only 12 points.

Under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, PBKS experienced a turnaround, finishing as runners-up in the 2025 season. However, they narrowly missed the playoffs in the subsequent season despite a strong start.

KL Rahul remains PBKS's top run-scorer, amassing 2,548 runs in 55 matches at an average of 56.62. After a stint with Lucknow Super Giants, where he led the team to the playoffs twice, he has continued to excel with Delhi Capitals, showcasing a resurgence in his T20I batting.
