KKR's Bowling Woes and Leadership Changes

KKR IPL 2026: The Kolkata Knight Riders are grappling with a series of setbacks as they prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season. The latest blow comes with the news that Indian pacer Akash Deep will miss the entire season, leaving the team's bowling lineup looking quite vulnerable. Former Indian spinner R Ashwin has expressed concerns that the current bowling attack lacks the intimidation factor it once had.

Ashwin analyzed KKR's strengths and weaknesses, stating, "Opponents are unlikely to feel threatened by KKR’s bowling lineup. The element of surprise and fear that used to exist has diminished. Previously, batsmen would study bowlers closely, but that’s not the case anymore." He emphasized that Varun Chakravarthy is at a crucial point in his career where he needs to adapt and evolve.

He also noted the decline of Sunil Narine, mentioning, “He can no longer bowl his faster deliveries effectively due to his bowling action. With Eden Gardens being a smaller ground, it becomes easier for opposing teams to attack without fear.” Ashwin warned that the combination of a smaller playing field and a lack of unpredictability among bowlers could lead to a challenging season for KKR.

Reflecting on the team's auction decisions, he remarked, “Initially, I believed KKR had a strong bowling lineup. However, with Mustafizur Rahman unavailable and Matheesha Pathirana injured, along with Harshit Rana ruled out, the situation looks grim.” Despite the addition of Blessing Muzarabani, who has shown promise, Ashwin is concerned about the overall depth of the squad amidst these injuries.

Additionally, Ashwin commented on the impact of Shreyas Iyer's departure, who previously led KKR to their third title in 2024. He critically assessed the team's current prospects, saying, “While they have the spirit to fight, I doubt they can secure victory. KKR has won the championship three times, twice under Gautam Gambhir and once with Shreyas Iyer. Losing Iyer means missing out on a significant opportunity for success.”
