Kieron Pollard's Unexpected Transition to Joburg Super Kings

In a surprising twist for T20 cricket, Kieron Pollard, the West Indies cricket icon, is set to don the yellow jersey of Joburg Super Kings (JSK) in the upcoming fifth season of SA20. This marks a significant departure from his long-standing allegiance to the Mumbai Indians and their associated franchises, a loyalty that has spanned over a decade.

During the ongoing SA20 auction, Pollard was acquired by JSK, a sister franchise of Chennai Super Kings, for R 1.5 million. This move follows his extensive tenure with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and their sister teams, including MI Cape Town in SA20, MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC), and MI Emirates in the International League T20 (ILT20).

The official SA20 account tweeted, "What’s just happened!? Joburg Super Kings immediately bids on Kieron Pollard and the bid goes unopposed. The West Indian will don the yellow at #BetwaySA20 for R1.5 million."

Currently, Pollard serves as the batting coach for the Mumbai Indians and is the head coach of MI London in The Hundred in the UK. He continues to play for MI Emirates and MI New York in ILT20 and MLC. His addition to JSK is expected to enhance their prospects for clinching their first SA20 title, a trophy that has been previously secured three times by Sunrisers Eastern Cape and once by MICT in 2025.

Throughout his 12-year journey with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL from 2010 to 2022, Pollard had notable performances against CSK, accumulating 583 runs in 27 matches at an impressive average of 36.44 and a strike rate nearing 172, including four fifties and a top score of 87*. He also claimed 14 wickets with best figures of 2/12.

Pollard stands as the second-highest run-scorer in T20 internationals, just shy of the 15,000-run milestone with 14,999 runs in 754 matches, averaging 31.71 and boasting a strike rate of nearly 151, alongside two centuries and 71 fifties. His bowling record includes 341 wickets at an average of 25.36, with best figures of 4/15.

In the 2023/24 and 2025/26 SA20 seasons, Pollard played for MI Cape Town, scoring 207 runs in 11 innings at an average of 29.57 and a strike rate of 171.07, with a highest score of 33*. He also took four wickets.

The fifth season of SA20 is set to kick off on Sunday, January 17, at St George's Park, featuring a rematch of last season's final between the defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and the Pretoria Capitals. The tournament will conclude with the final on Sunday, February 21.
