Buttler's Confidence in Phillips Ahead of IPL 2026

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India] - March 28: Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler from Gujarat Titans (GT) has shown strong faith in fellow right-handed batter Glenn Phillips, asserting that Phillips will make a significant impact whenever he gets the chance in the upcoming IPL 2026 season.

During a media roundtable prior to the IPL 2026, Buttler noted that although Phillips has not had as many opportunities as anticipated, his impressive history in T20 cricket speaks volumes. He clarified that the final decisions regarding team selection rest with the captain and selectors.

Buttler praised the New Zealand player, highlighting his extensive success in T20 formats. He emphasized Phillips' dual capability to contribute with both bat and off-spin bowling, along with his outstanding fielding skills, which make him an invaluable team member.

“I’m not in a position to make selections; that’s up to the captain and selectors. Glenn Phillips is an exceptional player with a long history of success in T20 cricket. He is dynamic, a fantastic batter, can bowl off-spin, and is among the best fielders globally,” Buttler remarked.

He reiterated that Phillips provides numerous options for the team management and expressed confidence in his potential performance. “He offers the captain and coach a variety of choices, and I believe he will excel when given the opportunity. The IPL is the premier tournament globally, featuring the best players, and with only four overseas players allowed, it often comes down to opportunity. I’m certain that when Glenn gets his chance, he will shine,” Buttler added.

At 29, Phillips has played for two franchises in the IPL. He made his debut with Rajasthan Royals in 2021, appearing in three matches and scoring 26 runs. Later, he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2023 season, where he accumulated 39 runs across five matches.

Phillips was picked up by the Gujarat franchise during the 2025 auction for Rs 2 crore but missed that season due to an injury. Nevertheless, the franchise has retained him for the 2026 season.

The IPL 2026 season is set to commence on March 28, with the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad, while GT will take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their opening match on March 31 in Mullanpur.
