IPL 2026 Set to Begin Amid Legal Controversy

A legal challenge has been raised questioning the legitimacy of the league, which has been running since 2008. The complete schedule will be revealed after upcoming state elections. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling cricket season.

IPL 2026 Launch Date and Legal Challenge

The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is scheduled to commence on March 28 (Saturday), featuring ten teams competing for the prestigious title. This year's tournament is particularly significant following India's triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, just days before the tournament kicks off, an unusual legal challenge has emerged, declaring the league, which has been operational since 2008, as illegal. A resident of Ernakulam, identified as Ashique, filed a petition in the Kerala High Court, claiming that the IPL is not an officially recognized league in India, thus rendering the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s use of the name 'Indian Premier League' unlawful. Nevertheless, a report from a local media outlet indicates that a division bench, led by Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V.M., dismissed the petition, stating that the arguments presented lacked merit.
