IPL 2026: Record-Breaking Run Totals and Thrilling Matches
IPL 2026 Sets New Records for High Scores
The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has turned into a remarkable showcase of high-scoring matches, equaling the previous season's record for the most 200-plus totals in a single tournament.
In a recent encounter between the Gujarat Titans (GT), the reigning champions, and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), both teams surpassed the 200-run mark. KKR emerged victorious by 29 runs, enhancing their chances for a playoff position. This match marked the 51st and 52nd instances of 200-plus scores this season, tying it with the 2025 edition.
Among these, 24 scores have exceeded 220 runs.
The 2024 season holds the second-highest record with 41 such totals, while the 2023 season had 37.
Throughout 60 matches this season, a staggering total of 20,920 runs has been accumulated over 915 innings, yielding an average of 29.84 and a strike rate of 155.43. The season has seen 13 centuries and 122 fifties, with the highest individual score being 152*. Additionally, players have collectively hit 1,837 fours and 1,150 sixes, according to statistics from ESPNCricinfo.
Notably, every team has produced at least one centurion this season, a first in IPL history. KL Rahul's remarkable 152* against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the Delhi Capitals (DC) marked the first time an Indian has scored over 150 runs in an IPL innings, and only the third instance in the tournament's history. In that match, PBKS successfully chased down a target of 265 runs set by the Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium, marking it as the most successful run chase in T20 cricket history.
Last season, a total of 25,166 runs were scored across 73 matches and 1,130 innings, with an average of 28.99 and a strike rate of 152.39, featuring nine centuries and 143 fifties. The season also saw 2,245 fours and 1,294 sixes.
With numerous matches still to play, IPL 2026 has the potential to become the highest-scoring season in terms of runs, centuries, batting averages, strike rates, and boundaries, driven by a fearless new generation of batters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, and Finn Allen.
In the recent match, GT chose to bowl first, and KKR capitalized on this decision. After an early dismissal of skipper Rahane (14), Finn Allen (93 off 35 balls, including four boundaries and ten sixes) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi put on an explosive 95-run partnership. Following Allen's exit, Raghuvanshi achieved his fifth fifty of the season, accelerating the scoring during his 108-run partnership with Cameron Green (52* off 28 balls, with three fours and four sixes), leading KKR to a total of 247/2 in 20 overs. Raghuvanshi finished with an unbeaten 82* off 44 balls, hitting four boundaries and seven sixes.
Mohammed Siraj and Sai Kishore each took one wicket.
In the chase, Sai Sudharsan had to retire hurt early on. Skipper Shubman Gill (85 off 49 balls, with five fours and seven sixes) and Jos Buttler (57 off 35 balls, with five fours and two sixes) formed a 128-run partnership, keeping GT in contention. However, after their dismissals, GT struggled to maintain the required run rate, finishing at 218/4 in 20 overs.
Sunil Narine (2/29) was the standout bowler for KKR and earned the 'Player of the Match' accolade.
Currently, GT holds second place with eight wins and five losses, totaling 16 points, while KKR sits in seventh with five wins, six losses, and one no result, accumulating 11 points.
