IPL 2026 Playoffs and Final Venue Announcement Looms Amid Uncertainty
IPL 2026 Venue Decisions on the Horizon
New Delhi, May 5: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to reveal the locations for the IPL 2026 playoffs and final shortly, although the final's venue remains uncertain.
According to BCCI insiders, the playoff matches are anticipated to be held across Punjab and Karnataka. However, Bengaluru is facing challenges that may hinder its ability to host the highly awaited final.
A BCCI source indicated that the tradition dictates the defending champions should host the final. Yet, ongoing political issues in Bengaluru, particularly concerning MLA ticket allocations, are causing significant disruptions.
"The venues for the IPL 2026 playoffs and final will be disclosed soon. The matches are likely to be split between Punjab and Karnataka. Traditionally, the last year's champions should host the final, but the MLA ticket situation is problematic in Bengaluru. If unresolved, the BCCI may relocate the final to another city," the source mentioned.
Prior to the IPL 2026 opener featuring the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar proposed that each MLA should receive a minimum of five IPL tickets, arguing that elected officials are "VIPs" who should not have to queue.
In response, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that three tickets for RCB matches during the ongoing IPL would be allocated to MLAs and MPs.
Following Shivakumar's remarks, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara refuted claims of IPL ticket misuse by MLAs, clarifying that tickets are purchased online and are attended by the buyers only.
He emphasized that only the MLAs or their family members can attend the IPL matches at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, as it is clearly stated that tickets are "non-transferable," preventing others from using them.
As of May 5, the IPL 2026 points table reflects a highly competitive league stage, with numerous teams vying for playoff positions.
Leading the standings are the Punjab Kings with 13 points from nine matches, showcasing a robust net run rate.
Trailing closely are Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans, all tied at 12 points but differentiated by net run rate, with RCB holding the top spot in that regard.
In the middle of the table, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals both have 8 points, maintaining their playoff aspirations while seeking consistency.
Kolkata Knight Riders sit in eighth place with 7 points, still mathematically in the race, though facing significant challenges ahead.
At the bottom, the Mumbai Indians have accumulated 6 points from ten matches, struggling to secure a top-four finish, while the Lucknow Super Giants are in last place with only 4 points, their playoff chances nearly extinguished.
