India Faces Tough Challenge After AFC U17 Asian Cup Loss to Australia
India's AFC U17 Asian Cup Journey Begins with a Setback
Jeddah [Saudi Arabia], May 7: India kicked off their AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 journey with a disappointing 0-4 loss against Australia, a team that has previously reached the semi-finals.
Following the withdrawal of DPR Korea from the tournament, India finds itself in a reduced Group D. Their next group stage match is scheduled against the reigning champions, Uzbekistan, on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
With the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals, the upcoming clash against Uzbekistan is crucial for the Blue Colts, as highlighted in a recent release.
A victory over Uzbekistan, coupled with Australia defeating the Central Asian team on May 13, could propel India into the quarter-finals, which would also secure their place in the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2026. Even a draw might suffice if Australia wins by a significant margin.
In the wake of the loss to Australia, the Indian squad is reflecting on their performance but remains hopeful and determined to achieve a positive outcome in the next match.
Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper Rajrup Sarkar had a commendable performance, making several crucial saves that boosted the team's morale.
Rajrup commented, “We were aware of Australia’s attacking strength, and I prepared myself mentally for their aggressive approach. After conceding early, I knew I had to elevate my game, which I believe I did. We could have performed better, but we made some errors at critical moments. Nonetheless, we are confident about giving our best in the upcoming match.”
Captain Dallalmoun Gangte has already moved on from the previous defeat, stating, “After yesterday’s loss, we must give our all. For me, that means performing better than we did yesterday. This is a must-win match; losing would mean elimination.”
He added, “Uzbekistan is the defending champion and is strong in all aspects—technical, tactical, and physical. We need to remain fully confident and focused on the next game. Nothing else matters; we must give everything we have.”
Attacker Azlaan Shah Kh is also gearing up mentally for the match against Uzbekistan, saying, “Uzbekistan will undoubtedly be physically strong, but our focus must be on maintaining mental strength in both defense and attack.”
“Every match teaches us something, and we need to learn from our mistakes. We’ve analyzed Uzbekistan’s gameplay, and our strategy is straightforward: we must win.”
