New Delhi, May 6: On Wednesday, India and Vietnam upgraded their relationship to an enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership, committing to significantly bolster their economic and defense collaborations following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese President To Lam.
Modi emphasized that both nations share a unified perspective on the Indo-Pacific, pledging to work together towards upholding the rule of law, peace, stability, and prosperity.
"Vietnam is a crucial component of India's Act East Policy and Vision Ocean. We also share a common vision for the Indo-Pacific region," Modi stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted India's intention to expand its relations with ASEAN, leveraging Vietnam's cooperation.
"By enhancing our defense and security collaboration, we will continue to contribute to the rule of law, peace, stability, and prosperity," he remarked.
To improve financial connectivity, both countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation between their central banks.
Modi also announced that India's UPI will soon be linked with Vietnam's fast payment system.
It was noted that discussions during the delegation-level talks included concerns regarding China's increasing military assertiveness.
Lam, who is on his first state visit since being elected President this month, arrived in India with a high-level delegation on Tuesday.
In his comments, Lam expressed that both nations are committed to deepening political trust and enhancing security cooperation.
Last year, the two countries signed an agreement to establish a framework for submarine search, rescue, and support mechanisms, along with a letter of intent to bolster bilateral defense industry collaboration.
