Dhaka, April 6: The Indian High Commissioner, Pranay Verma, expressed India's eagerness to enhance relations with Bangladesh through a "forward-looking approach" during a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday.
This discussion took place as both nations are working to mend their bilateral relations following the BNP's victory in the parliamentary elections held in February.
According to a social media update from the Indian High Commission, Verma and Rahman focused on fostering people-centric cooperation across various sectors that align with the developmental goals of both countries.
Verma emphasized India's commitment to collaborating with the Bangladeshi government and its citizens, advocating for a positive and constructive partnership based on mutual interests.
As reported by the state-run BSS news agency, Verma's visit was a courtesy call at the Cabinet Division office in Dhaka, although further details were not immediately available.
Officials familiar with the discussions noted that the envoy highlighted the importance of leveraging geographical proximity to create new opportunities through enhanced economic ties, connectivity, and cultural exchanges.
Attendees at the meeting included Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, the premier's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, and Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe.
This meeting occurred just before Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman's scheduled visit to New Delhi, where he is expected to engage with Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
India has shown a renewed interest in strengthening ties with Dhaka since the BNP assumed power following the elections on February 12.
Relations between the two countries had faced significant challenges during the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
On February 17, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented the Indian government at the BNP's swearing-in ceremony, delivering a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In his letter, Modi extended an invitation to Rahman and his family to visit India at a mutually agreeable time, assuring them of a warm welcome.
