In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on April 20, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya praised Tilak Varma for his match-winning century, highlighting the team's comprehensive 99-run victory against Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2026.

During the post-match presentation, Pandya underscored the significance of this win for MI's campaign, noting both individual excellence and team collaboration.

"This win is crucial. Winning away is always tough, and Ahmedabad hasn't been a favorable venue for us, so this is quite satisfying," Pandya remarked.

A standout moment of the match was Varma's first IPL century, which helped MI reach a total of 199/5. The MI captain expressed special admiration for the young batsman, stating that his performance was both timely and vital for the team.

"Tilak has immense talent and doesn't require much guidance. It was high time he stepped up and delivered, which was essential for him and the Mumbai Indians," Pandya added.

Pandya also addressed the ongoing discussions regarding Jasprit Bumrah's role with the new ball.

"It's interesting to see many questioning why Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) hasn't bowled with the new ball. He has only done so about 7 or 8 times, so it's not a Hardik Pandya issue; it's just Jassi being exceptional," he explained.

The MI captain emphasized that the team's bowling strategy focused on executing plans effectively in the right areas, which proved successful against Gujarat.

"It was all about bowling accurately and with the right intent," Pandya noted.

He also commended the younger players for their contributions in the field, particularly mentioning Naman Dhir.

"The youngsters performed remarkably well, and fielding was crucial. A special shoutout to Naman as well," he said.

Mumbai Indians showcased a strong all-around performance, defeating Gujarat by 99 runs in IPL 2026. Batting first, MI scored 199/5, bolstered by Tilak Varma's outstanding unbeaten 101 off 45 balls. Despite losing early wickets, MI made a strong recovery in the death overs.

In response, Gujarat struggled significantly, facing a severe top-order collapse, losing Sai Sudharsan for a golden duck and falling to 45/3 within six overs.

The innings continued to deteriorate as Ashwani Kumar (4/24), Mitchell Santner (2/16), and AM Ghazanfar (2/17) dismantled the batting order, leading to Gujarat's total of 100.

With this victory, Mumbai climbed to seventh place in the IPL 2026 standings, achieving two wins against four losses from six matches. The five-time champions now hold four points with a Net Run Rate of +0.067.

Conversely, Gujarat dropped to sixth place with three wins and three losses from six games, remaining at six points, but with a net run rate of -0.821.
