Harbhajan Singh Praises Yuzvendra Chahal's Spin Bowling Mastery in IPL
Harbhajan Singh Analyzes Chahal's Performance Against CSK
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On April 4, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh discussed Yuzvendra Chahal's impressive bowling performance against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the seventh match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Chahal's bowling statistics of 1 wicket for 21 runs in 3 overs played a pivotal role in the Punjab Kings' five-wicket victory over CSK on Friday. In a game where most bowlers had an economy rate exceeding 9, Chahal's economy rate was notably low at just 7.
During an appearance on JioStar, Harbhajan highlighted that Chahal's success stems from his ability to impart more flight and spin on the ball, which results in a dip and turn that often misleads batsmen into making mistimed shots. He referred to this technique as 'classical spin bowling,' a skill that is becoming increasingly rare, with only a few bowlers like Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav still mastering it.
"When observing from the side, a spinner's delivery should emerge from the top of the hand and descend in a half-moon shape. Chahal, who isn't particularly tall, leverages this by giving the ball more air and flight. The greater the flight, the more revolutions the ball undergoes, leading to enhanced dip and turn. This creates an illusion for the batter, making them feel the ball is closer than it actually is. Consequently, when they attempt a big shot, they often hit it high but not far, as they are too early in their swing," Harbhajan Singh explained.
He further emphasized, "This is the hallmark of a genuine spinner. Classical spin bowling is a dying art, akin to dinosaurs; only a few remain. Kuldeep and Chahal are among them. Others may claim to be spinners, but they often bowl fast like everyone else."
Chahal holds the record for the most wickets in IPL history, having taken 224 wickets in 176 matches at an average of 22.68.
