FC Goa Secures Vital Win Against Fortis FC
Hawally [Kuwait], October 21: In a thrilling encounter at the Mohammed Al Hamad Stadium, FC Goa emerged victorious with a 2-1 win against Bangladesh's Fortis FC during their second match in the AFC Challenge League 2026-27 Group C.
After suffering a 1-2 defeat in their opening match against FC Regar-TadAZ from Tajikistan, the AIFF Super Cup champions bounced back to keep their hopes alive. FC Goa is set to face Qadsia SC from Kuwait in their final group match on Friday, aiming for a spot in the quarter-finals. Progression will be determined by the group winners and the best second-placed team across the three groups in the West Zone, as per a statement from AFC Media.
From the outset, FC Goa displayed a strong offensive, with Muhammed Nemil narrowly missing the target after a quick counter-attack. They took the lead in the sixth minute when Udanta Singh Kumam delivered a precise cross to an unmarked Jorge Ortiz, whose header was inadvertently deflected into the net by Ananta Tamang.
Ortiz continued to pose a threat, shooting wide shortly after and forcing a save from Fortis goalkeeper Sujan Perera in the 14th minute, while Sandesh Jhingan's follow-up attempt hit the left post from the resulting corner.
Fortis FC threatened to equalize in the 36th minute when Pa Omar Babou's long-range shot was saved by Lara Sharma. Essa Jallow's header from Babou's cross was also blocked, leaving FC Goa with a narrow lead at halftime.
After the break, Goa intensified their efforts to extend their lead, with Francisco Feuillassier setting up Jhingan for a header, but Perera was quick to clear the danger in the 52nd minute.
Perera continued to be a key player for Fortis, denying Malsawmsanga KC's long-range shot in the 61st minute as they absorbed mounting pressure.
Fortis managed to equalize in the 78th minute when Stephen Chukwude played a through ball to Rafayel Tudu, who skillfully evaded his defender and slotted the ball past Lara.
However, FC Goa responded swiftly, regaining the lead in the 85th minute. Feuillassier navigated through the defense and provided a pass to Chiki, who deftly lifted the ball over Perera into the top left corner.
Fortis faced further challenges when Essa Jallow was sent off in the seventh minute of stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Udanta.
