FC Goa Aims for Third Consecutive Win Against NorthEast United in ISL Clash
Match Preview: FC Goa vs NorthEast United FC
Guwahati (Assam) [India], April 23: FC Goa is set to pursue their third consecutive victory as they face NorthEast United FC in Match 65 of the Indian Super League 2025-26 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium this Friday.
NorthEast United FC, playing their second home match in a row, seeks to recover from a narrow 0-1 loss to the reigning champions, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, in a match affected by rain.
Despite a commendable effort under tough conditions, the Highlanders were defeated by an early goal from Robson in the fifth minute, according to reports.
Currently positioned 12th in the league with seven points from nine games, a win on Friday would elevate the Guwahati team to 10 points.
A standout performance came from stand-in captain Asheer Akhtar, who made 17 defensive contributions. However, the team will face challenges due to the absence of Ankith Padmanabhan, who dislocated his shoulder in the previous match, along with regular captain Miguel Zabaco.
NorthEast United FC's assistant coach, Amogh Adige, shared insights on their strategy, stating, “Our preparation remains consistent for every match. We’ve focused on their strengths, particularly in attack and set-pieces. We take confidence from our last game, and there’s a positive atmosphere in the squad as we aim for three points.”
Midfielder Mayakkannan Muthu added, “In football, there are wins and losses. We always aim for victory. After a defeat, we move forward and prepare for the next challenge. Goa will be a tough opponent, and we must maintain our focus for the entire 90 minutes to achieve a favorable outcome.”
On the other hand, FC Goa arrives in Guwahati with renewed confidence after handing league leaders Mumbai City FC their first defeat of the season, securing a 2-0 victory at home, which significantly boosts their title aspirations.
Currently in third place with 16 points from nine matches, their campaign has been bolstered by a strong defense that has conceded only six goals, a record shared with Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
A win away would bring them to 19 points, keeping them firmly in the title race. Their recent success has been greatly influenced by standout performances, particularly from Muhammed Nemil.
Nemil inspired FC Goa to victory over Mumbai City with a stunning 35-yard goal in stoppage time, and he also recorded the highest number of shots on target among Indian players in the match week.
Head coach Manolo Marquez reflected on their recent resurgence, stating, “In the last game, we regained many aspects we had lost, including our pressing, hunger, and positioning. NorthEast United has a clear style of play, focusing on building from the back and quick counter-attacks. It will be a challenging match, but we have shown we can compete with any team.”
FC Goa’s 18-year-old midfielder Prachit Gaonkar expressed his enthusiasm for playing at this level, saying, “Being part of the first team is a significant step. Competing in high-level matches is invaluable, and I have learned a lot. I will continue to learn from the coaching staff and experienced players. Every minute on the pitch will help me grow.”
Historically, matches between these two teams have been closely contested, with over half of their 22 ISL encounters ending in draws. FC Goa leads the head-to-head with six wins compared to NorthEast United's four, along with a goal tally of 38-31. Their last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Guwahati.
Both teams have clear goals for Friday's match. NorthEast United FC needs a home win to build momentum and climb the standings, while FC Goa aims for an away victory to enhance their points and move into the upper half of the table.
With a draw offering little benefit to either side's ambitions, fans can expect an intense match where only a win will suffice for both teams.
The match is set to kick off at 17:00 IST and will be available for live streaming on FanCode and broadcast on Sony Sports Network.
