Faf Du Plessis Urges Mumbai Indians to Reassess Bowling Strategy After RCB Defeat
Mumbai Indians Face Challenges in Bowling Strategy
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 13: After the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) triumphed over the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI), veteran South African batsman Faf Du Plessis emphasized the need for MI to address their bowling issues beyond Jasprit Bumrah's four overs. He suggested that the team should optimize Bumrah's effectiveness by deploying him during crucial moments of the match.
The MI team continued to struggle, as RCB posted a formidable total of 240/4, thanks to half-centuries from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and captain Rajat Patidar. Despite a remarkable 71* off just 31 balls from MI, which included one four and nine sixes, they fell short by 18 runs, finishing at 222/5.
Bumrah's wicketless streak in the IPL has now extended to five matches, dating back to the previous season's qualifier two. MI bowlers faced significant challenges in claiming wickets, particularly against Kohli's steady batting and the relentless scoring from Salt and Patidar. Bumrah has gone 122 balls without taking a wicket, marking the longest such stretch in his IPL career.
Currently, MI sits in eighth place on the points table, with only one victory in four matches, largely due to Bumrah's inability to secure wickets.
During an appearance on Star Sports 'Cricket Live', Du Plessis remarked that MI must explore solutions for their bowling woes beyond Bumrah's contributions. He stressed the importance of reassessing their strategy, particularly during the powerplay, which may involve tactical adjustments or changes in the playing XI.
Du Plessis noted, "In high-scoring matches, it’s crucial to evaluate what the rest of the bowling attack is conceding beyond Bumrah's economical overs. The Mumbai Indians need to maximize Bumrah's impact by utilizing him at pivotal moments, but they face tough competition from strong batting line-ups. A reassessment of their approach, especially in the Powerplay, is essential, whether that means tactical changes or introducing new players."
Commenting on Sherfane Rutherford's explosive performance, Du Plessis praised the southpaw's consistent improvement over the past year and a half.
"This performance is not surprising. He has been a standout performer in various T20 leagues and has significantly enhanced his skills. Previously, he faced challenges in certain match-ups, but he has worked diligently on those areas and now plays with greater confidence," he added.
Since the beginning of last year, Rutherford has emerged as one of the top T20 batters globally, amassing 1,982 runs in 87 innings at an average of 30.49 and a strike rate of 153.28, including seven fifties and a highest score of 86.
Additionally, JioStar expert Sunil Gavaskar commented on MI's batting performance, noting that the team struggled after Rohit Sharma's injury and the quick dismissals of Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Verma. He emphasized the need to maintain the required run-rate.
"At one point, it seemed like the Mumbai Indians would have difficulty reaching 200 runs. Following Rohit Sharma's retirement and the dismissals of Rickelton and Tilak Varma in the same over, they became overly cautious and failed to break free. They needed to score at least 12 more runs to stay on track with the required rate, but they couldn't manage that. Even while rotating the strike, the required rate kept increasing. This is an area they must address. As Hardik Pandya pointed out, both their batting and bowling Powerplays are not yielding the necessary results to gain control of the game," he stated.
The legendary Indian cricketer also commended RCB captain Rajat Patidar, stating that winning the trophy last year has made him "far more settled and confident."
"Last year, leading RCB for the first time, Rajat Patidar may have felt some pressure, especially with players like Virat Kohli in the squad. This season, after clinching the championship, he appears much more composed and confident. He is playing with complete freedom and showcasing exceptional cricket. His range of shots has been particularly impressive," he remarked.
This season, Patidar has faced 59 balls against spin, scoring 129 runs at a strike rate of 218.94, with nine fours and 11 sixes, being dismissed twice. Against pace, he has scored 66 runs off 32 balls, with a strike rate of 206.25, including two fours and seven sixes, being dismissed once. Patidar is currently tied for the most sixes this season with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (18) and is the second-highest run-scorer, with 195 runs in four innings at an average of 65.00 and a strike rate of 214.28, including two fifties.
