East Bengal FC Secures Comeback Victory
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 6: In an exciting encounter at the Mumbai Football Arena, East Bengal FC staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Mumbai City FC 2-1 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26. The victory was secured with second-half goals from substitutes Youssef Ezzejjari and Nandha Kumar, overturning an early goal from Brandon Fernandes on Tuesday.
The Red and Gold Brigade showcased a strong performance in the second half, earning three crucial points that propelled them to the top of the league table with 21 points from 10 matches, edging out Jamshedpur FC on goal difference. Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC fell to fifth place with 19 points from 11 matches, marking their first home defeat of the season. Kevin Leonel Sibille, East Bengal's centre-back, was honored as the Player of the Match for his outstanding defensive display.
East Bengal started the match with aggressive pressing, but the sturdy defense of Sibille and Anwar Ali held firm initially. However, Mumbai City struck first in the eighth minute when a long throw from left-back Akash Mishra caused chaos in the box, allowing midfielder Brandon Fernandes to score with a precise left-footed shot into the top corner.
As the match progressed, Mumbai City continued to create more opportunities. Winger Vikram Pratap Singh made a strong run down the right, but his shot was blocked by defender Jeakson Singh. Lallianzuala Chhangte also missed a chance shortly after, and Vikram's attempted chip went wide following a lofted pass from midfielder Joni Kauko.
East Bengal gradually found their rhythm but faced challenges breaking through Mumbai's defense. Mohammed Rashid forced a save from goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa in the 28th minute, while efforts from Edmund Lalrindika and captain Saul Crespo either went off target or were blocked. Mumbai City remained the more dangerous side, with Brandon testing goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill again before halftime.
At the start of the second half, Oscar Bruzon made three attacking substitutions, bringing on forward Miguel Figueira, striker Youssef Ezzejjari, and midfielder Souvik Chakrabarti. The changes paid off quickly as East Bengal began to apply pressure on the Mumbai defense.
The equalizer came in the 58th minute when a challenge by Kauko inside the box led to a penalty for East Bengal. Substitute Ezzejjari stepped up and converted with a powerful shot into the bottom corner, despite Lachenpa diving the right way.
Mumbai City sought to respond swiftly, with Chhangte forcing a sharp save from Gill in the 61st minute, but East Bengal's defense held strong. In the 71st minute, the visitors took the lead. Following a move initiated by Figueira, substitute Nandha Kumar cut in from the left and fired a shot from the edge of the box that deflected off defender Bijay Chhetri, beating Lachenpa to make it 2-1.
In the closing moments, Mumbai City pushed hard for an equalizer. Jorge Ortiz tested Gill from distance, and Chhangte delivered a dangerous cross that saw substitute Gyamar Nikum hit the woodwork in stoppage time. Kauko and Ortiz both had late attempts saved or narrowly missed, but East Bengal's defense remained resolute.
After a lengthy period of added time, East Bengal FC clinched a vital away victory, completing a comeback that highlighted their attacking prowess and tactical adaptability.
