Delhi Capitals Revamps Coaching Staff Ahead of IPL 2027

New Coaching Team for Delhi Capitals

In a significant shift, the Delhi Capitals (DC) are preparing to unveil a revamped coaching team for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. Reports indicate that former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to join the franchise as the bowling coach, while Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, is anticipated to take on the role of head coach, as per sources from a sports media outlet.

Additionally, Amit Mishra, a former leg-spinner for India, will be part of the coaching staff, with the iconic all-rounder Yuvraj Singh likely to be appointed as the batting coach, the report suggests.

Vaas, who is celebrated as Sri Lanka's leading fast bowler, concluded his international career with impressive statistics, including 355 wickets in Tests and 400 in ODIs. Although he played for the Deccan Chargers during the initial IPL seasons from 2008 to 2010, this will mark his debut in a coaching capacity within the league.

With a wealth of coaching experience, Vaas has previously worked with the Sri Lankan national team in various roles from 2012 to 2022. He has also contributed as a fast-bowling consultant and mentor at Sri Lanka Cricket, focusing on nurturing emerging fast bowlers.

His coaching journey began with the New Zealand men's team and included a role with Ireland during the 2016 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. At the franchise level, he has coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and was the head coach for Kandy Royals in the 2026 Lanka Premier League.

On the other hand, Mishra is stepping into coaching for the first time after a notable playing career in the IPL. The 42-year-old has played for teams such as Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants, according to reports.

Having retired from professional cricket last September, Mishra ranks among the top wicket-takers in IPL history, with 174 wickets across 162 matches. He also holds the record for the most hat-tricks in the tournament, achieving three during his IPL tenure.

These coaching changes follow an agreement between the co-owners of Delhi Capitals, GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports, which stipulates that franchise operations will alternate management between the two owners every two years.

Previously, GMR appointed Venugopal Rao as the director of cricket, Hemang Badani as head coach, and Munaf Patel as bowling coach for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, as reported by the sports media outlet.

Vaas and Mishra have reportedly commenced their roles and are currently engaged with players at the Delhi Capitals academy. The franchise has yet to make an official announcement regarding the complete coaching staff for the 2027 IPL season.
