Delhi Capitals Enhance Squad for WPL 2027 with Key Player Acquisitions
Delhi Capitals Strengthen Their Roster Ahead of WPL 2027
New Delhi, October 29: The Delhi Capitals have bolstered their lineup for the forthcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 season by acquiring four new players during the auction held in Kochi on Wednesday. Retaining a solid core of 13 players, the franchise has added the explosive Indian batter Kiran Navgire, promising 15-year-old all-rounder Uma Kashvi, Indian all-rounder Nazma Khan, and Scotland spinner Kirstie Gordon, completing their 17-member squad.
The franchise invested Rs 1.05 crore at the auction, bringing their total squad expenditure to Rs 14.95 crore, which includes Rs 13.9 crore allocated for retained players. Navgire emerged as the marquee signing at Rs 75 lakh, while Kashvi, Khan, and Gordon were each acquired for Rs 10 lakh.
Following the auction, Head Coach Jonathan Batty expressed his contentment with the team's new acquisitions, emphasizing the enhanced batting strength, squad depth, and the potential of their latest young recruit.
“Kiran was a key target for us. She is arguably the most dynamic and powerful batter available in the auction. With Shafali leading the order and additional power hitters like Chinelle Henry, Kiran adds another layer to our batting strategy. This could make our batting lineup truly formidable,” Batty stated in a press release.
Among the most thrilling additions was Uma Kashvi, the 15-year-old all-rounder from Karnataka, who made history as the youngest player sold in WPL auction history. A right-arm spin-bowling all-rounder, Kashvi has already represented India Under-19 in a series against Sri Lanka Under-19, gaining early exposure to the international junior circuit.
Batty praised the franchise's scouting team for identifying Kashvi's talent and highlighted that her signing represents a long-term investment in her growth.
“She has been on our radar for some time. Our scouts have closely monitored her performances and provided excellent feedback, and I have also seen her play. We believe she has the potential to become a superstar in the future,” Batty remarked.
At just 15, Kashvi is still developing, and the team does not expect her to be fully polished immediately. This is a long-term project for the Delhi Capitals.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for her to be part of this environment, learn from our top coaches, and work alongside international stars. We hope she will gain significant knowledge from her teammates. This is just the beginning of a journey that we hope will lead to recognition in India, and we are eager to see her progress,” Batty added.
The Delhi Capitals retained a strong core before the auction, including captain Jemimah Rodrigues, explosive opener Shafali Verma, seasoned all-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland, and South African batter Laura Wolvaardt. The retained group also features Chinelle Henry, N Shree Charani, and several promising Indian talents, providing a solid foundation for the coaching staff.
Reflecting on the overall squad composition, Batty noted that the new additions have further enhanced both the starting eleven and the bench strength.
“Going into the auction, we already had a robust group of 13 players. Our starting lineup was strong even before the auction, and I believe we have made it even better. We now have the potential to improve both our starting eleven and squad depth, which will give me some selection challenges as a coach—a very positive situation. That’s exactly what we want—tough decisions because we have the strongest squad possible,” he explained.
In conclusion, Batty stated, “We are very pleased with how everything unfolded. There were many dynamics at play, but I think it went as well as we could have hoped.”
